As rumored a couple of days ago, Willem Dafoe has officially been announced as part of the cast of Justice League Part One, the DCEU’s first ensemble event. With Zack Snyder at the helm, and the stars of Batman v Superman returning, there is a lot riding on this movie (even if not as much as with this year's superhero debacle).
Willem Dafoe is the second Spider-Man actor to be cast in the Justice League project; J.K. Simmons was announced months ago as the new Gotham City Commissioner James Gordon, putting rumors of the character’s death in the DCEU continuity to rest in the process. Unlike J. Jonah Jameson, we still don't know what kind of role the first Green Goblin will portray.
According to THR, Willem Dafoe is set to be one of the good guys - and that is just about all. Even with Justice League Part 1 set to debut in just about 18 months, we don't know anything about it (no, we cannot be certain about the main baddie just yet). Nonetheless, the addition of the two-time Oscar-nominated Dafoe will certainly stir up Internet speculation (especially since many see him as being able to create the perfect villainous character).
No matter what role Willem Dafoe ends up playing, this is yet another sign that Warner Bros. keeps aiming higher when it comes to its DC movies. And, no matter what the critics said about Batman v Superman, the actors’ performances were rarely trashed - so yes, we are looking forward to seeing the Shadow of the Vampire star in the DCEU and we hope he won't end up underused in some minor role.
