And so it begins - at least we hope so. Earlier today it was announced that 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television will co-produce an X-Men TV Show, to be aired on FOX. And this is a first – in the most literal sense of the word.
Obviously, Fox planned to make a series on its own, a series that wouldn’t be included in the larger shared universe. However, those plans fell apart. And, right now, we only have Legion in development, which is produced by Marvel TV and a Fox subsidiary.
And, still, if Legion is co-produced basically by Marvel and Fox, why is this new show more important? Well, because Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb himself released a statement, saying that this is truly the first time the studios have worked together.
Check it out:
Marvel Television is thrilled to be co-producing with 20th Century Fox Television on our first project. Matt's a huge fan of X-Men, and his take on the X-Men universe, with its rich characters and high-stakes adventure, is exactly the show we want on FOX. It's a great team of creative producers, who will be making something entirely unique (via Screen Rant).
At this moment, the reports hint that this new show will be set in the same universe as the big screen X-Men. Thus, two parents discover that their children are mutants, in a world where everybody (including the government) is hostile towards this new species. Forced to run, the parents and the children meet other mutants and fight for their survival.
So is this the beginning of a beautiful friendship? We do hope so. Even if Fox has proved that its X-Men movies can be successful, the shared universe cannot compete with the MCU just yet. So maybe, just maybe, this new collaboration means that a bigger deal will be secretly brokered between Fox and Marvel.
Of course, this is just wishful thinking at this moment. However, Fantastic Four and X-Men do deserve a homecoming of their own. Just like the many villains they face.
