Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is set to return within a few days for the second half of its third season after a three-month-long break. In the mid-season finale, "Maveth", we witnessed something very rare for Phil Coulson - he brutally murdered Bret Dalton's Grant Ward in an alien world.
Even though Ward isn't actually dead (and he's coming back with a new identity), that event must have had a serious impact on the SHIELD director. And Clark Gregg thinks that impact could be so devastating that his character might turn into a supervillain! The actor expressed his concern in a recent interview with TV Guide. Here's what he said:
I don’t think he comes back with any easy answer. I think in the moment, it felt like the only course of action possible to him. I don’t think he’s going to know for some time if this was a terrible mistake that changes him and maybe turns him into a supervillain – it becomes, really, a show about a team run by a supervillain – or not.
Even though he's said that, it is highly unlikely that they would turn Son of Coul (as the Asgardians call him) into a baddie. I assume that it was figurative term used by the Phil Coulson actor.
Phil Coulson didn't have “any malice” towards Leo Fitz!
Many fans have pointed out some kind of a villainous intention in the look Phil Coulson shared with Iain De Caestecker's Leo Fitz. Well, Clark Gregg ensures that there wasn't anything like that in his character's mind. He explained:
I didn’t feel there was any malice towards Fitz. He just didn’t care too much about anything in that moment. And that’s a dark place that Fitz saw him in, and that’s a dark place that he goes back to his team in.
