Thus far, the Thor films are considered to be the weakest ones in the entire MCU franchise - and this is mainly because of inconsistent plots and less than average acting. Nonetheless, the God of Thunder has a chance at redemption in 2017, when the last movie of the trilogy will be released. Even Kevin Feige said that Thor: Ragnarok will be something like the main event of Phase III, outside of the Infinity War movies.
While this particular trilogy (unconcluded yet) has introduced the best Marvel villain yet, it has shown that it cannot give the audiences a character powerful enough and who can actually pose a threat to the mighty Thor. The main fight of the first flick was against a pretty much entirely depowered Destroyer (when compared, of course, to the comic books version), while The Dark World almost replicated the scenario.
If the first movie showed the Frost Giants trying to take over Asgard (or something thereabout, since the plot made little to no sense from this point of view), the second one showed the Dark Elves trying to do pretty much the same thing, with the ultimate goal of bringing darkness to the entire universe (again, from this point of view, The Dark World suffered also). What will happen during Thor: Ragnarok, which could make this the most important flick of Phase III?
Well, we do know that Thanos is coming and that he needs to both take the Tesseract from the Asgardians, as well as defeat them, since they are the protectors of the Earth. But does this mean that the Mad Titan will become himself involved in the battle, as teased in the Age of Ultron credits scene? Or will he scheme throughout the flick, like he did until now?
We believe that it will be both, with him making an appearance to deliver the finishing blow. But who will be his minions? This list is all about that - so check out the rumored villains for Thor: Ragnarok, the villains who have the most chances of appearing in the movie.
Loki
The first villain everybody thinks about is Loki - as said before, this is one of the most complete characters in the MCU, always scheming and always searching for a way to defeat his step-brother and take over Asgard. At the end of Thor: The Dark World he apparently succeeded - after helping his brother defeat Malekith the Accursed, he faked his death and somehow managed to overthrow Odin.
But what is his endgame? Almost everybody believes that he is still under the influence of the Mad Titan - we actually saw fear in his eyes, in the first Avengers movie, when the Other mentioned his master. So it isn't hard to see him clearing the way for the arrival of Thanos. And Thor: Ragnarok might just be the movie in which his story arc becomes completed - since this is Disney, we can actually bet that Loki will, in the end, find redemption and somehow come to the aid of his step-brother (losing his life, for real this time, in the process).
But things aren't as easy as they seem. As we all know, Thor: Ragnarok will feature one other Avenger: the Hulk. We have no idea, yet, how he reaches Asgard. To have the God of Thunder bring the Jade Giant as an ally seems too weird a thing to do, especially since Hulk isn't such a stable character. Instead, we believe that Loki will manipulate somehow the Green Goliath and mind-control him into defeating the entire Asgard. Just like in the awesome Hulk vs. (you must have seen this coming a mile away for Thor: Ragnarok)
But we also believe that, in the end, Loki will see the error of his ways and release the Hulk from his grip. And this is where Thanos will enter, beat Thor to a pulp, and throw the Green Goliath like a ragdoll.
Surtur
One of the first rumors concerning Thor: Ragnarok saw Surtur as the main antagonist of the movie. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe unfolded and as we found Loki on the throne, the rumor changed and the devilish Muspelheim fire demon is said to be the representative of another race of Giants trying to take over Asgard.
And this seems repetitive - doesn't this resemble the plot of the first Thor flick?
In any way, Surtur does possess the raw power with which he can defeat the united forces of Thor and the Hulk. But where does that leave Thanos? We can all assume, at this moment, that the Fire Demon from the MCU won't be in any way like the one from the comics. At which point we can even say that he will be the distraction used by the Mad Titan in order to reach the Tesseract - as the two Avengers battle this new threat, he can just sneak in. Although this will be, once again, another missed opportunity of showcasing why he is the most powerful threat (yet) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In any way, if at first this rumor had some credibility, we can safely assume that it doesn't any longer - if it will be so, then Thor: Ragnarok will once again present another barely sketched supervillain based on a tremendous threat of the comics.
Thor: Ragnarok's Enchantress
Enchantress is one of the Thor characters long awaited by the fans - a supervillain we believed we caught a glimpse even in the trailer of Avengers: Age of Ultron (we still don't know if it was her or some other member of the Asgardian race). So will she appear?
Back in 2013, a couple of months before The Dark World was released, Tom Hiddleston have a very interesting interview, one which will spark a short-lived rumor. According to the actor, what he wanted the most for Loki is to have an on-screen relationship. And it will be one straight out of the comics, with none other than Enchantress, the powerful Asgardian sorceress who has clashed with Thor on numerous occasions.
And he obviously was talking about a relationship during the third installments of the Thor franchise, which was still unnamed at that time.
This rumor has since resurfaced, most recently when the Age of Ultron's trailers were released, with what was later found out to be a dream sequence of Thor. As said, it is still undecided whether the female character spotted was Enchantress or some other Asgardian.
In any way, if she will be the main antagonist of Thor: Ragnarok, we have no idea what connection will be between her and Thanos. However, given her mind-controlling abilities, we can bet that she will have a role to play when it comes to Hulk arriving in Asgard.
One of the most powerful sorceresses in Asgard, she might as well be the first main female supervillain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, things don't really add up - but still, she could be a nice addition to the franchise.
Hela
Lastly, there is Hela, the Asgardian goddess of Death and one of the most frequent enemies of Thor. Pretty much like Enchantress, we did believe we saw her in the Age of Ultron trailers - namely in the scene in which Thor visit the Norn cave. Eventually, the scene ended on the cutting room floor, with Kevin Feige saying about it that it was nothing than eye-candy, with no real impact for the plot.
We don't believe him and we are still convince that she was Hela. Of course, a different version of the character from the comic books - while in the comics she is the daughter of Loki, it won't be so in the MCU.
Thor: Ragnarok is the perfect chance for introducing this character - and she needs to be introduced, since she could play the most important role in the Mad Titan's search for the Infinity Stones. If in the comics Thanos wanted to wipe all life in the universe after becoming infatuated with Mistress Death herself, the MCU might just want to present an altered story.
Hela could be the reason why Thanos searches for the ultimate weapon - the Asgardian goddess of Death could be the perfect replacement for the Mistress Death of the comics. Thus, we won't just get a first female supervillain antagonist, but we will also get a reason for the existence of the entire MCU.
