Star Wars: The Force Awakens – The Fan Theories

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

By far, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the biggest event in years, as far as movies go - the 18th of December seems so far away for us and those many-many fans who have already bought the tickets. And despite releasing three trailers, a bunch of posters and countless other promotional materials, we still believe that we are kept in the dark.

And we truly are - for example, the magnificent trailers released until now haven't revealed anything about the plot of the movies (as any trailer should do, Terminator). Every piece of promotional material has been put under the lens by the fans - maybe, just maybe, some new hidden detail can be uncovered.

And this has led to the appearance of countless of rumors and theories concerning Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many of them focusing on the great unknown of the movie - Luke Skywalker. So which of these fan theories are the most appealing? If you want to know, then this is the list to check out.

As reminder, we must again say that these are just theories, none of them being confirmed until now. Nonetheless, they may as well have guessed how the flick will unfold – so these are potential spoilers. So you might want to look away from here on!

Finn/Han/Poe dies

Rey crying over...
Rey crying over…

The second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens featured a particular scene, with Rey in tears over what seemed to be a dead body - and since that presumed body wore a leathery accessory, the fans believe that either Han, either Fin, either Chewbacca will die. The scene seems to take place in the same snowy forest in which Kylo Ren ignited his lightsaber for the first time.

Among these three, the fans speculate that the one most likely to die is Han Solo. Harrison Ford campaigned intensely for his character to make a heroic exit during Return of the Jedi. Furthermore, he seemed to be adamant about not reprising his role until 2010. The cash and (hopefully) the scrip convinced him otherwise - so maybe now he has his chance of seeing Han Solo sacrificing himself for the sake of his friends.

And we do see him wearing a leather jacket in the trailer - however, he isn't the only one.

Another rumored death, which can be dismissed pretty easily, is the one of Finn - who was seen wearing the same type of jacket (or maybe even the same) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, since he is a newly introduced character which is supposed to play an important part in this new trilogy, we doubt it.

The other character presumed to die is Poe Dameron, who is also wearing the same leathery type of jacket. Given the fact that Oscar Isaac doesn't get too much screen time in the trailers. However, he is said to appear in Star Wars VIII, so"¦

Who do you think will die?

His father's son

Is Luke a Sith?
Is Luke a Sith?

This one is the oldest rumor there is - in Star Wars: The Force Awakens Luke Skywalker will turn to the dark side. And this rumor can be traced back to the time when Luke discontinued his training in order to help his friends - with Yoda warning him that this easy path will lead him out of the light.

Of course, during the original trilogy, Luke has been tempted on various occasions, resisting each time - the final tryout led to the death of the Emperor. However, those words of Yoda do seem to have an ominous meaning.

Furthermore, back in 2005, Mark Hamill himself said that he would be interested to explore this new dimension of the character - what will happen if Luke took Vader's place. This didn't happen in the original trilogy, so maybe it will happen now. And this kind of a twist is what was missed in the prequels.

Such a move will certainly anger a part of the gigantic fan base. However, this dark twist which mirrors the fate of Anakin would certainly open up a myriad of possibilities.

And speaking of mirroring - you certainly noticed that the trailers pay lots and lots of homage to the first Star Wars flicks. Maybe Luke Skywalker will indeed become evil in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Maybe this is the reason we didn't even catch a glimpse of him during the trailers (and no, we don't really believe that the one petting R2-D2 is him).

Famous parents

Obviously, the fans want to see a connection between the new main characters of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the ones of the original trilogy. And, even if the galaxy is big, all the newly introduced heroes have been, at one point or another, rumored to be the sons or daughters of Luke, Leia, and Han.

Out of these all, none of the rumors have been confirmed - only Finn was revealed to be the son of Lando Calrissian.

Nonetheless, here are those rumors, some of them very interesting. The first one, and the one with most chances of being proved true, is that Rey is the daughter of Han and Leia. There are pretty obvious hints that she is a Skywalker, in those references made to the original trilogy: a desert home planet, a droid companion, barely making enough for a living, and so on. And then you have the biggest hint of them all - her last name isn't revealed yet, which is no accident according to J. J. Abrams.

The other rumor concerns Kylo Ren, who seems to be the main antagonist of the movie. To many fans, he is the son of Luke, the son who has forsaken his father and who has taken to the dark side. He is obsessed with Darth Vader and he seems to have a certain connection with him - which could be explained if Vader was his grandfather.

Lastly, there is the rumor saying that Kylo Ren is in fact the twin brother of Rey - in a way mirroring the scenarios from the expanded universe, in which Han and Leia had twins, one of them turning evil. And then there is also the poster, which couldn't be blunter in underlying the connection between the characters.

Of course, there is the question as to how these two became separated. Of course, there is the question as to why did Leia and Han separate them. But we bet we will find out when Star Wars: The Force Awakens will finally be released.

The new Jedi(s)

Finn and Rey

Since Kylo Ren is, obviously, playing for the dark side, someone needs to take his (or her) spot into the light - thus, Star Wars: The Force Awakens needs to introduce some new Jedi masters or, at least, apprentices. And this is pretty basic, after all, since the franchise has always focused on the exploits of a Jedi.

So who will he/she/they be?

Of course, the first one everybody thinks about is Rey, who mirrors the story of Luke Skywalker (based on what we have seen in the trailers). Even if she isn't spotted holding a lightsaber, the fact that she may be a Skywalker makes us almost certain that she is the new hero of this new trilogy.

There is another character who is also believed to be force-sensitive - the newcomer Finn, who is actually seen wielding a lightsaber and even going against Kylo Ren (in the snowy forest, a scene which sparked the rumor that he may be dead). How can any of these two stand against an already trained Ren Knight? We have no idea.

Another possibility is that these two are both force-sensitive and on their way to becoming Jedi Masters. Which also leads us to another rumor (which has very low chances of being proved truthful), that these two will make the first on-screen Jedi couple.

Recruiting from among the enemies

The torture of Poe Dameron
The torture of Poe Dameron

In one particular scene from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, we see Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron facing Kylo Ren - though this is sugar-coating it. In fact, what we see is the latter torturing the former - to what end?

It may just be a scene in which Kylo Ren tries to extract information about the rebels from the captured X-Wing pilot (a torture scene which will leave the hero dead). But there is also another possibility, of Kylo Ren brainwashing Poe and making him his minion.

As we have found out, Poe Dameron is a skilled X-Wing pilot, among the very best. He is also perceived as one of the unspoken leaders of the rebels - so capturing him and turning him to the dark side is a battle won by the First Order. The rebels will lose a leader and become demoralized, while we will get a twist which opens some other interesting possibilities.

In any way, whether his character dies or not, we are more than certain that Oscar Isaac will deliver an intense performance!

Stepping into the absurd

Did you miss Jar Jar?
Did you miss Jar Jar?

From here on, the rumors begin to become more and more absurd. If until now what we presented was in the realm of possibility, what follows is far from having any chance to happen.

Thus, we can say that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will see the return of the most despised character from the prequels. Apparently, the newest of all the rumors says that we haven't seen the last of Jar Jar Binks. According to this new fan theory, the animated character was more than just a stupid nuisance - he was in fact a Sith warrior and master manipulator, who always pursued his own goals. In the end, he was supposed to become the biggest threat in the galaxy.

Apparently, George Lucas himself came with this idea, of having an unassuming character becoming the big baddie along the way. However, after the fans' reaction, he changed everything and turned Jar Jar into a secondary character. The rumor goes on to say that J. J. Abrams picked this pitch and that the much-hated Binks will have a major role in the following movies.

Utterly insane, we know - but, who knows? Nobody - because we are still in the dark, as far as Star Wars: The Force Awakens is concerned.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - the biggest twist

Kylo Ren/Luke Skywalker
Kylo Ren/Luke Skywalker

As said, these last theories are utterly nonsense for some of us. But, as far as other Star Wars: The Force Awakens fans are concerned, they actually make sense.

In this way, the last theory regards the great unknown of Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Luke Skywalker. By expanding the theory according to which Luke has turned evil, some fans believe that he is, in fact, Kylo Ren (even if, apparently, the latter character has already been unmasked and is officially played by Adam Driver).

So what do you think? Which ones of these theories have the most chances of hitting the right notes?

One thing can certainly be said about all of them - that they show the interest awakened in the fans all over the world. Considering that Star Wars is one of the most beloved franchises of all time (despite the less than average prequels), we wouldn't have expected any other way.

We don't know which of these theories and rumors are true. What we can say is that, just like you, we too await the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
