Logan Trailer – The Most Important Details

While many dismissed Logan as one of the least anticipated superhero flicks of 2017 (you know, because it's Fox), yesterday's trailer changed their tune. Raw, emotional, and with surprising bursts of action (especially the red band version), the first clip for Logan made everybody believe that this will be one of next year’s best comic book movies.

Of course, it may be a bit premature to say that, especially after such a small tease.

The surprising trailer contains quite a few hints about what will happen in the movie. Thus, besides the overall plot, there are some cues that might explain what happens to some characters, what happens to others, and so on and so forth.

So if you want to know more, check it out. But be warned - if you hit next, you will encounter some pretty big spoilers!

A different future

What went wrong? (20th Century Fox)

As James Mangold explained, Logan takes place in the future. However, this is a different future from the one in which the rest of the X-Men have lived (the one in which Apocalypse arrived), being set in the Days of Future Past timeline. So, in a way, Logan is set in an alternate reality, one in which Professor X didn't seek the younger versions of the X-Men, as promised to Wolverine in Days of Future Past.

If it’s a bit complicated to understand at this point, it’s because we don't have all the details about the film. But it isn't as if the X-Universe timeline weren't a mess already.

So I can say that Apocalypse didn't arrive for Logan in the form of the all-powerful ancient mutant, but in another way. I can say that after he was retrieved from Potomac, something else happened, which led to the extinction (I presume) of all mutants.

It remains for some of the details to be clarified. Maybe it can all be explained through the whole time-ripple effect that Beast/Hank McCoy was talking about in Days of Future Past - if it wasn't the Sentinels that brought the destruction of the mutants, it was something else"¦

Wolverine, the alcoholic

Funeral (20th Century Fox)
Funeral (20th Century Fox)

There are quite a few scenes in the trailer in which we see Logan's hand trembling. In connection with the shot in which we see him drinking at a funeral (most likely a flashback), we can assume that alcohol is the only way he can make the pain go away. But can I also believe that he must deal with a sense of guilt?

There are two possibilities here. One of them is the survivor's guilt - with everyone close to him dead, Wolverine must be blaming himself because he was the only one to survive. Which might explain what we heard in the teaser released before the trailer's arrival (the whole God made it last too long quote).

Another possibility is for Wolverine to actually be the one who brought about the destruction of the mutants. Just like in the Old Man Logan storyline, Wolverine might have been tricked into killing his friends. I have no idea how that could work out - although an explanation could have been offered via the introduction of another character. Want to know more?

Caliban

Caliban (20th Century Fox)
Caliban (20th Century Fox)

In the comics, Caliban's main mutant ability is to sense and locate other mutants. We have already seen him in a very minor role in X-Men: Apocalypse, portrayed by another actor. However, in the comics, Caliban has other abilities as well, including the power to control the emotions of others.

In the Old Man Logan storyline (which is followed, at least in spirit, in Logan), Wolverine is tricked by Mysterio into killing the X-Men. Of course, Fox doesn't own Mysterio, so the studio might go another route.

Caliban is rumored to be one of the allies of the mutants in Logan. But this is just a rumor. So what if he is the one to blame for Wolverine's current state of being? What if Caliban influenced Logan and, in a fit of rage, he killed all of his friends?

This is a possibility that should be taken into account at this moment. Especially since it doesn't necessarily mean that Caliban will stay evil for the entire duration of the film (there are a few quick shots in the trailer in which it appears that he is being tortured by the Reavers).

Another interesting thing is that Logan seems to struggle at one point in the trailer, as if trying not to kill someone. Could this be the moment when all of the mutants become gone?

X-23 - or is it someone else?

X-23 or someone else? (20th Century Fox)
X-23 or someone else? (20th Century Fox)

Until now, I guess everybody assumed that the little girl spotted on the set and in the trailer is X-23, a clone of Wolverine created by Dr. Zander Rice (portrayed in the film by Richard E. Grant). There are a couple of hints in the trailer that she might be this character - when fighting, when crawling, and in the final shot (she has blood on her knuckles, just like Wolverine has when he unsheathes his claws).

However, James Mangold did say yesterday that he won't reveal the identity of the character just yet. Given the fact that he also said that Logan is a movie about family, he may have given away too much already.

But, at the same time, this could be a brand new character, especially since we don't see the girl with her own claws. There is a particular scene in the trailer (not the red band one), when Wolverine defends himself from someone with adamantium claws - that could be X-23, but it could be someone else, as well.

Donald Pierce and the Reavers

Of course, it was already revealed that Donald Pierce would be the main muscle Logan will go up against. The Reavers were also revealed on the same wponx Instagram account. But the trailer showed that Pierce is indeed, partly enhanced, having a robotic hand.

Back to the scene where Logan is fighting someone else with claws, that someone else could also be Lady Deathstrike, who has allied at times with Pierce and his Reavers. This is a possibility, especially since it would give more depth to Pierce - in the comics, he was infatuated with Lady Deathstrike, even if she didn't feel the same way.

Lastly, there is one other possibility - what if, in that scene, Logan is fighting Daken, Wolverine's son? There’s been no word about him being in the film - so it would be quite a huge surprise.

One more thing needs to be added here - will the Reavers be as expendable as any other army/group of villains? Are they just cannon fodder between Wolverine and the big boss? Hopefully, it won't be so.

Professor X

Professor X (20th Century Fox)
Professor X (20th Century Fox)

Logan isn't just the last appearance of Hugh Jackman in the X-Universe - it is also the last time Patrick Stewart becomes Professor X. There were quite a few pics leaked from the set that suggested that Professor X is on his last run - the trailer makes it even clearer. He is the one who asks Wolverine for help to protect the little girl, but he is also in dire need of help.

Considering his role in Wolverine's life on the big screen, he is a father figure, and his death would throw Logan further into the pit of despair. And, if I read it correctly, he does die in Logan. And this makes the shot with all three of them at the table even more emotional.

The ending scene of the trailer could be misleading. But, if it isn't, then Wolverine has just buried Professor X - I guess everybody assumes that Logan has a shovel in his hand. It would be quite a huge reveal for a first trailer. But I guess everybody knew from the start that not all heroes will survive.

Healing

Age shows (20th Century Fox)
Age shows (20th Century Fox)

One of the most surprising things in the Logan trailer is that Wolverine’s body is covered with scars. His hands are also bloody when he unsheathes his claws. What gives? Wasn't he supposed to have unparalleled regenerative abilities? Wasn't he supposed to heal from anything almost instantly?

According to James Mangold, he has so many scars because he has aged considerably since the last time we saw him (in this timeline, it would be Days of Future Past). And, as he aged, his powers were diminished - in the sense that he now bears the marks of the fights.

Of course, the story is much more complex than that - especially if Logan is indeed the broken man the trailer shows him to be. Anything from aging to psychological scarring can be a reason for his diminished powers.

Maybe this is a secondary reason for his decision to move into a smelting plant and make a home (and hospital for Professor X) out of a water tower - to get away from the physical pain, as well. I guess time (and other trailers and clips) will reveal this as well.

Mind fight

Mind fight (20th Century Fox)

There is another interesting shot in the trailer, featuring someone in a chair (maybe a wheelchair), with guns pointed at his head. Is that Professor X? It could be, since the character is bald. And the shot is rippled, as if the character is struggling, as in a nightmare, like those terrific cold-turkey shots from Requiem for a Dream.

So that could be Professor X struggling to break free by freezing time or by simply manipulating some of the men in the room.

But that could also be Professor X fighting off Caliban. We do see Caliban, as said, appearing to be tortured by the Reavers. But it can also be a shot in which he fights Professor X. So this could be a turning point in the arcs of both Professor X and Caliban.

Anyway, the struggle feels very real (just like everything else in the trailer). And it is another reason why Logan has become overnight one of the most talked about superhero flicks of 2017 (To be noted, without any biased comparisons, the trailer for Logan seems more appealing to audiences than the teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. II, released one day in advance.).

Capture and escape

It's got to be her (20th Century Fox)
It’s got to be her (20th Century Fox)

Whether the young girl is X-23 or not, she is the reason for the Reavers’ clash with Logan. There is a shot in the trailer in which she appears to escape by jumping from a building. Is this in the beginning or toward the end of the movie?

And then there is another shot featuring the girl in which she is shackled - by the Reavers, of course, after they’ve arrived at Wolverine's place. Is this a shot that takes place before she jumps, or after?

As clear and grounded as the trailer may be, there are still quite a few questions which can arise. And, just like the one before this, I do believe that the answers are essential. Who helps the girl after she escapes? How does she reach Logan? Was she experimented upon before her escape or only afterwards?

Time will tell"¦

Sci-fi/western/drama

Come on... (20th Century Fox)
Come on… (20th Century Fox)

One of the best things about the Logan trailer is that it doesn't feel like a superhero movie - instead, it feels like a sci-fi western set in the not-too-distant future.

James Mangold has said a couple of times that the intention is to separate Logan from all the other superhero flicks (which also includes the X-Universe). I guess he did succeed in this. The setting (desert) makes it feel like a western. The fact that Pierce has a robotic arm makes it feel like a sci-fi movie. The theme of the flick (family) and most of the shots from the trailer make it feel like a drama.

And only afterward come the bursts of action and the superhero stuff, like the claws and the fights with a berserker Wolverine.

There is even a very peculiar and unexplained shot (the black and white one, as if shot with a Go-Pro camera), as in a found-footage film.

The cinematography is awesome, as well. And, above all, there is Johnny Cash's Hurt - the perfect song for this clip.

Logan is Hugh Jackman's last flick as Wolverine - hopefully, it will also be the best of the franchise and even of the X-Universe.
