Civil War: A Visit on the Set

Civil War

While we’re still waiting for a new Civil War trailer, Marvel has decided the fans can now be given more details about the MCU's next installment. So, backtracking to 2015, several journalists were present on the set, finding out everything they could about the movie - and now they can tell the world what they learned.

So, what transpired on the Civil War set? According to numerous websites, the movie will be a grounded one, just like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, avoiding any cosmic threats or teases. According to the sources, there are several surprises in the film, as far as the characters are concerned. But more on that later.

The Civil War will engulf the entire world, and the fans will have a very difficult time in choosing a favorite - unlike in the comics, both Captain America and Iron Man can justify their actions. There are new costumes, new pieces of equipment, and so on.

This list is all about what the journalists found out when visiting the set. So check it out - but be careful, because there are spoilers!

Interview with the Civil War writers

Who should be the first ones to reveal the implications of the Civil War, other than those who actually adapted the story? Markus and Stephen McFeely sat down and explained what the fans can expect from the movie. First and foremost, the writers said that the entire story will be Earth-based, so there will be no mention of the bigger events playing out in the MCU's background.

What we can understand from this is that some rumors may not be true, at all. One of those rumors concerns the Hulk, who was supposed to have at least a cameo in the film. The rumor said that we would see how the Green Goliath is sent into space to start his Thor: Ragnarok journey. We guess we can call it debunked now.

The writers also said that choosing Team Cap won't be so easy for the fans, because the character has changed since he first appeared, when he was the embodiment of morality and courage. What we can understand is that his motives won't be as easy to empathize with as previously thought. And seeing that he sides with a renowned assassin"¦

And that’s another reminder from the writers that the Civil War will engulf the entire world. Furthermore, they’ve also indicated that Black Panther is, from a certain point of view, better than both Captain America and Iron Man, since he sees the big picture and is not guided by subjective reasoning.

Speaking of which, the writers also said that Iron Man will have a very personal reason for choosing a different side of the barricades. And, unlike what we previously believed (that the Winter Soldier killed his father), the reason will be shown very early in the film.

Adapting the Stamford incident

Markus and Stephen McFeely also talked about what sparks the entire Civil War. Of course, there is a continuity between the events of The Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, and Civil War. However, what actually causes the Avengers to split into two teams?

In the comics, the Stamford incident was what forced the government to come up with the Registration Act. In the movie, there will be a different kind of incident, which many suspect will be the bombing of an UN council meeting.

The writers didn't actually reveal what kind of incident it is. However, producer Nate Moore gave the fans a few hints. According to Hit Fix, Crossbones will play a crucial part in it. Which makes us believe that the few scenes from the trailer in which he appears are indeed the ones which provide the grounds for a Civil War.

But the producer went even further, saying that this is a different Brock Rumlow, one who doesn't work for anybody but himself. Apparently, Crossbones now has his own agenda - could it be payback for his disfigurement?

However, we shouldn't actually trust the producer entirely - he may be sending the fans in the wrong direction when he says that Crossbones has his own agenda. Maybe he has one - but is it still just part of a bigger and more evil plan (Zemo anybody?!?)?

Crossover between TV shows and movies

While this is not necessarily Civil War related, Slash Film reports that producer Nate Moore actually endorses the idea of crossovers between TV shows and big screen movies. Of course, the producer wasn't too explicit, but he did say that it is possible to see the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage (and even Punisher) interacting with the big stars of the MCU.

No, they won't appear in Civil War - but they will certainly appear sometime later on. Most likely, we believe, during the 2 Infinity War movies.

But why didn't this happen earlier than this? Because there was no opportunity, according to the producer:

I think it's possible for sure. It's interesting that the TV timeline and the film timeline move so differently, because they tell stories so quickly, because they have 10 to 22 episodes. So sometimes it's just hard for those things to line up perfectly. But we love that idea of ultimately, say a Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Punisher, Agents of SHIELD, maybe there's a way to get "˜em back in there as long as it makes sense for our storytelling and doesn't prohibit them from telling a story. We say, “Oh, this happened to Daredevil somewhere in the future”, and they go, “Well, that's not what the TV show wants us to do.” We don't want that to start to feel like there's friction, so we haven't figured out how to do it but we'd love to do it.

The Russo Brothers interview

Screen Rant reports that the Russo Brothers said the Civil War will bring a sense of novelty with it. Thus, if The Winter Soldier was a political thriller that brought the downfall of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America: Civil War will feel more like a psychological thriller. We can safely assume that it will bring about the downfall of the Avengers"¦

As far as the movie’s influences are concerned, Robert Downey Jr. revealed a year ago that it will draw from the Godfather series. But now, the directors have said that the fans should also check out some other interesting movies, namely Fargo (the Coen Brothers) and Seven (David Fincher). Just hearing about these sources of inspiration makes us believe that the Russos will score another hit for Marvel.

Other than that, the directors also said that Vision's arc will involve his need to fit in. Civil War will pick up one year after the events of Age of Ultron took place. So the android had plenty of time to figure out (to some extent) how the world works. According to the Russos, Vision is still trying to find out what his limitations are (pretty much like another newly introduced character).

The Black Widow and the huge fight

The directors also talked about Scarlett Johansson's role in the Civil War - as we all know, she is team Iron Man, even if The Winter Soldier events saw her getting closer to Steve Rogers. Knowing her past relationship with Tony Stark (she was sent to spy on him), many assume that the Black Widow will change sides at some point in the movie.

According to the Russos, deciding Black Widow's story arc was one of the most difficult tasks they had to deal with in the course of making the movie. Which further makes us suspect that she has actually infiltrated Iron Man's team to gather intelligence for Captain America.

However, at the time when the journalists were on the set, she was still fighting against Steve Rogers. As Screen Rant reports, when the two teams face off in that airport, she and Hawkeye go at it again, as they did in the first Avengers movie. She will use some special batons, while Hawkeye will use a staff (his bow extends when the string is removed).

Meanwhile, in the background, another fight takes place - between Black Panther and the Winter Soldier. And, while the latter fights without using any weapons, the focus is on Black Panther, who is very fast and agile. In addition, he has vibranium inserted throughout his costume. According to the website, we can expect the superhero to actually have claws, which will be attached in post-production.

Anthony Mackie interview

While Anthony Mackie was set on making jokes about his experience while shooting the Civil War, he did say something very interesting. According to him, the Avengers don't actually choose sides. The actor said that the conflict is more between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark - the rest of the team has already chosen both of them:

I think the conflict is more so between them. I don't think anyone else chooses sides. I think we're all on Steve and Tony's side. The conflict is more with them, and we step back and watch it unfold.

Nonetheless, the actor also made it clear that Falcon's story arc will be a continuation of the one that began during the Winter Soldier events. The same confidence and respect which was shown during the second Captain America film will also be seen during the Civil War - which leads us to another thing.

As seen in Age of Ultron, Captain America trusts Falcon with finding the Winter Soldier. When asked about this, the actor didn't give a definitive answer. He just said that he isn't allowed to say anything about this issue - but we already know.

Anthony Mackie also said that Falcon gets to interact with all the other superheroes, which he certainly found exciting. He also said that his suit got an upgrade, courtesy of Tony Stark, pretty much like all the other Avengers.

Chris Evans interview

Captain America: The First Avenger

When asked by Screen Rant about the state of Captain America in Civil War, Chris Evans said that his character has plenty of issues to resolve. And he wasn't talking just about his relationship with the other Avengers. According to the actor, Steve suffers from the survivor's guilt and that is why Bucky Barnes is so important to him. In a way, we believe, this is where the psychological element of the movie will be felt more intensely - Steve Rogers being torn between his new allegiances and his subjective need to make up for his past mistakes (having let Bucky fall into the hands of HYDRA).

In a way, according to the actor, Steve's selflessness, which we got used to in the previous movies, will play just a secondary role. And that is because the character has found someone with whom he can actually connect, someone in which he can place his utmost trust.

But his decision to go against the Sokovia Accords is also based on the fact that people are willing to forget about their freedoms in order to feel safe - a central plot-point of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This story continues during the Civil War, and describes the character’s full arc in the MCU: the poster boy for the Army (The First Avenger), destroying the organization for which he worked (The Winter Soldier), and finally going up against the government (Civil War).

There is a difference, though: if in the first 2 installments it was easy to see who the bad guys were, the end of the trilogy will be a lot trickier from this point of view. And that is because both Steve and Tony have valid arguments when choosing a side.

When asked what the other Avengers would say about Steve's friendship with Bucky, Chris Evans said that they probably don't hold it against him. And that is because everybody was taken advantage of in the past (Hawkeye was brainwashed, Black Widow was misled in her actions).

Lastly, does the Civil War feel like the end of a trilogy for Captain America? According to Chris Evans, that isn't necessarily the case.

Sebastian Stan interview

The Winter Soldier (source Screen Rant)
The Winter Soldier (source Screen Rant)

When talking about Civil War, Sebastian Stan said that emotionally, his character picks up right where Captain America: The Winter Soldier left him: no longer knowing who he is, trying to find his way in the world. This is very interesting, since it mirrors, in a way, the path of Captain America, who also had to readjust himself to the world.

Obviously, the actor was asked about his character's relationship with the other Avengers, namely with Tony Stark (given the rumor that, in the MCU, the Winter Soldier killed Tony's father). And, obviously, the actor didn't reveal anything - he just settled for saying what happened in the comic books. But he also added that this version of Bucky Barnes will not resemble anything we have seen on the big screen.

He is obviously different than he was in The First Avenger, being emotionally scarred and filled with remorse, while he isn't exactly the Winter Soldier, trying to restrain himself and not follow the same path as before.

Nonetheless, as he and Chris Evans have said, the Winter Soldier will take part in some very serious action scenes.

Jeremy Renner interview

Screen Rant also sat with Jeremy Renner during the Civil War set visit. According to the actor, Hawkeye (even without any superpowers) is the one guy on whom everybody can rely. His life is clearly divided between his family and his duty - which makes it all the more difficult when going against his friends.

Because, you know, this is what happens during a civil war. But the actor also said that nobody wants to kill anybody - at least at first, we believe. Because there is still friendship between the opponents, even if they actually become very brutal along the way.

But the actor also said something else - that he won't be on the Civil War set too much. What could that mean? Well, you can bet that he didn't say anything else.

Elizabeth Olsen interview

Elizabeth Olsen (source Screen Rant)
Elizabeth Olsen (source Screen Rant)

Obviously, since we see her flying in the trailer, Scarlet Witch has discovered that she possesses even more powers that expected. And that makes mind-manipulation a bit too ineffective - after all, this was the ability she first displayed in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Talking about her relationships with the other Avengers, Elizabeth Olsen said that her character feels closer to Hawkeye, given the whole speech delivered during Age of Ultron. But she added that her relationship with Vision is special, too.

And that isn't in the same way as in the comics. According to the actress, there is a different kind of connection between the characters. And that connection is given by the source of their powers - both of them had their lives changed by the Infinity Stone. Does this eliminate the possibility of the two ending up together? Not at all.

The actress also talked about Scarlet Witch's relationship with Tony Stark, saying that her character has accepted the fact that the billionaire isn't responsible for her parents' death. However, we are more than certain that there is friction between them, given the fact that she chose Captain America's side in the conflict.

Lastly, the actress said that she has no idea what the future holds for her character. Obviously, she said that when asked about the possibility of an M-day event in the MCU. Of course, there are no mutants in this shared universe - but that doesn't mean that her colossal powers wouldn’t be able to erase the abilities of all of the superheroes.

What do you think? Is this a possibility?
