Ant-Man is now playing on the big screens and it has proved to be actually important for the future MCU movies. The tiny superhero has, thus, introduced not just a new player, Scott Lang, in the Avengers team, but it has also provided the ground for other future movies.
In this way, we remember the reason for which Edgar Wright left the project: his ideas for Ant-Man didn't exactly fit the plans of the studio. After seeing the movie, we realize that changing the director and rewriting the script was essential not just for the movie itself, but also for the sake of Marvel-ous continuity.
The Quantum Realm
In this way, Ant-Man has introduced the Quantum Realm, which is in fact the Microverse from the comics. This movie just scratches the possibilities offered by this new dimension, in its climax, but surely promises to develop it in the future movies. What kinds of future movies?
When Ant-Man shrinks, he basically reaches a space which is beyond time and space. For the importance of this new dimension, Kevin Feige already gave an explanation, well before the actual movie was released: ""¦ the whole notion of the quantum realm and the whole notion of going to places that are so out there, they are almost mind-bendingly hard to fathom. It all plays into Phase Three" (via Screen Rant)
Which really gets us interested. The Microverse from the comics was, basically, Ant-Man's territory, as the name suggests. However, the Quantum Realm is about something else and it isn't just the minuscule superhero's domain. As Feige said, it is mind-bending. We can say that it is a rather amazing, a rather"¦ strange place.
You know where we are going from here on, right? Check out something about the strangeness and about a new hero set by Ant-Man!
The Quantum Realm - setting the premises for Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange is, in this way, the first film set by Ant-Man. Sure enough, there is nothing magical in quantum mechanics, physics, philosophy, and so on. However, this is the card Marvel intends to play - and, in this case, magic is nothing short than amazing, nothing else than strange.
This last movie of Phase II has thus introduced the idea of a new dimension, making the MCU expand even further. And, if we are to understand anything from what Feige said, then it is this: the Quantum Realm is nothing else than the door through which entities like Dormammu can enter the Avengers' world.
Here is what Feige said last year, when Doctor Strange was announced: "it's our opportunity to take that left turn into the supernatural. Now, what is the definition of supernatural? It varies. We like the idea of playing with alternate dimensions, ["¦] playing with the perceptions of reality." (via Screen Rant). And this cannot be anything else than a confirmation that Ant-Man has set up the premises of Doctor Strange.
But this isn't all - check out why Ant-Man, the most derided superhero, can actually have the biggest role in the defeat of Thanos!
Ant-Man and the Infinity War
In the MCU, it is expected for Thanos to become the god-like creature from the comics, once he assembles his Infinity Gauntlet. With power over the entire universe, he will be unstoppable (of course, we still don't know why there are two Infinity Gauntlets in the MCU, as Feige said, just like we don't know if he tricked us and there is just one), even in front of the united forces of all the heroes presented until Ant-Man, with the Guardians of the Galaxy included.
That is right, until Ant-Man - as said, the minuscule superhero has brought a new dimension to the MCU, the Quantum Realm, which can be the one dimension which unites cosmic powers, science and magic into one. It can be seen as a link between all of these, the binder which finally cements the diverse MCU.
But this isn't all - the Quantum Realm isn't just this. It is also an opportunity for Ant-Man himself to hide amid the cosmic powers of the Infinity Stones and thus escape the destruction laid by Thanos. There is a precedent in the comics, with Adam Warlock actually being inside the Soul Gem before helping in the fight against the Mad Titan.
But there are also other possibilities as to how Ant-Man can connect to the Infinity War! Check out on the next page!
Other possibilities
One of these possibilities talks about Eternity itself actually appearing in the Ant-Man movie - and this abstract had a role in the defeat of Thanos. Another possibility would be faking the death of all the superheroes we've met until now, thus making Thanos unaware of an impending assault - Scott Lang and Hank Pym could transport the heroes into the Quantum Realm, only to bring them back for the final battle.
Lastly, there is one more possibility - for Janet, wife of Hank, to be the embodiment of Eternity after being trapped for so long in the Quantum Realm.
Of course, these are all speculations. But they are grounded in what Ant-Man has presented us. What do you think? Can any of these stand?
On the next page, the most obvious connection!
Ant-Man and Civil War
What can be said? The Falcon cameo and the end-credits scene are all about this.
