5 actors that just don’t fit in Marvel roles

The comic book movies’ industry has been blossoming over the last years so much that most of the productions released in cinemas are whether Marvel’s or DC’s. Fans are delighted and other categories of audiences start liking these movies more and more. Most of the famous actors are happy too as they have their careers settled in long lasting franchises. And it keeps on pouring with heavy names from Hollywood landing in comic book movies.

Robert Downey Jr. finished five films with Marvel (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Avengers: Age of Ultron), he is currently co-starring in Captain America: Civil War and he’s looked at for a comeback for at least part two of the Avengers: Infinity War event. Chris Evans has been in six Marvel movies and the collaboration goes on and Samuel L. Jackson has a record of 9 Marvel movies.

There are many other actors who have a pretty good career thanks to Marvel movies. But there are some actors that could just not fit into the genre. To call them misfits? What is wrong with them and why they hated their Marvel roles?

Go read our list with 5 bad choices for Marvel movies! Who’s the worst?

5. Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk

Edward Norton played Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk and while some liked his part others totally disliked it. His performance was kind of a failure, like mixing water with oil, they just don’t blend. However, let’s say that he struggled. And we guess that he liked his part so much that we never saw him again in a Marvel production ever since.

The actor is known for notable performances in Fight Club, American History X, The illusionist and a long list of great movies. The Incredible Hulk just doesn’t fit in the list, as Edward Norton didn’t fit in the movie. Furthermore he had a conflict with Marvel Studios disagreeing with the running of the film.

It seems that Norton wanted to get involved in the production of the movie as well but his perspective was not to director‘s liking. And a conflict began. Marvel went on with their plans and Norton probably hated them forever.

4.Terrence Howard as James Rhodes in Iron Man

Terrence Howard was cast in Iron Man as Tony Stark's buddy James "Rhodey" Rhodes just when Marvel was debuting with their productions. At the time, we did not know if he was a good choice or a bad choice. He proved to be a bad one as he didn’t make us feel that he’s going to become War Machine (Rhodes becomes superhero War Machine). His acting didn’t convince the audience.

The actor, like many other Marvel misfits had a conflict with the studio regarding $7 million dollars that were jacked from him. Why would they have done that? Well, they thought that Robert Downey Jr. would be a better investment and they directed the money to the one that is indeed moving on in the MCU.

It turns out that the person I helped become Iron Man "¦ when it was time to re-up for the second one took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out,” Terrence Howard told BusinessInsider.

3. Idris Elba as Heimdall  in Thor

What a terrible experience for Idris Elba! Photo: marvel-movies.wikia.com

Idris Elba would agree if we said that he was terrible in the role of Hemidall. Make no mistake, he is a great actor but he did just not fit into the role. Maybe it’s because he didn’t even like the role?

His appearance in Age of Ultron was a contractual obligation that left Elba with a very bad opinion about Marvel movies. He said it himself! Talking with The Telegraph he revealed the “torture“:

“And in the actual scene my hair was different, my"¦ [Sigh] I was like, "˜This is torture, man. I don't want to do this.' My agent said: "˜You have to, it's part of the deal.'

I'm actually falling down from a spaceship, so they had to put me in harness in this green-screen studio. And in between takes I was stuck there, fake hair stuck on to my head with glue, this fucking helmet, while they reset. And I'm thinking: "˜24 hours ago, I was Mandela.' "¦ Then there I was, in this stupid harness, with this wig and this sword and these contact lenses. It ripped my heart out.”

2. Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts in Iron Man

Gwyneth Paltrow is not the action type of actress. We’d rather see her in romantic comedies, dramas or as Viola De Lesseps in Shakespeare in Love. Yet, she plays the role of Pepper Potts in Iron Man. And of course, “romanticism” is what she does there too. And even so, something looks wrong, she just doesn’t fit next to  Robert Downey Jr.

Recently, Cate Blanchett was cast for the role of Hela in Thor and I can’t wait to see if she’s going to fit or if she’s going to be like Gwyneth Paltrow. The instinct tells me that Blanchett will make a good role which means that there must be something wrong with Paltrow’s acting.

1. Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko in Iron Man 2

Mickey Rourke is in the same category with Edward Norton and was as disturbed by Marvel as Idris Elba. Despite the fact that he made a terrible character out of Ivan Vanko in Iron Man 2, the legendary actor had a fierce conflict with Marvel studios.

He really looks like a badass and if the chemistry was right, he could portray a perfect villain. Yet, neither the talent nor the attitude helped.

Here’s what happened, narrated by Rourke via Crave Online:

"[W]hen I did Ivan Vanko in Iron Man, I fought"¦ You know, I explained to Justin Theroux, to the writer, and to [Jon] Favreau, that I wanted to bring some other layers and colors [to the character], not just make this Russian a complete murderous revenging bad guy. And they allowed me to do that. Unfortunately, the [people] at Marvel just wanted a one-dimensional bad guy, so most of the performance ended up the floor."

"[It's] ****ing too bad, but it's their loss. If they want to make mindless comic book movies, then I don't want to be a part of that. I don't want to have to care so much and work so hard, and then fight them for intelligent reasoning, and just because they're calling the shots they"¦ You know, I didn't work for three months on the accent and all the adjustments and go to Russia just so I could end up on the floor. Because that can make somebody say at the end of the day, oh **** "˜em, I'm just going to mail it in. But I'm not that kind of guy. I'm never going to mail it in."
