Last November, Warner Bros. and MGM confirmed that a Tomb Raider reboot is indeed happening, with The Wave director Roar Uthaug at the helm. Then we waited until April for the news that The Danish Girl and Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander will portray Lara Croft in the movie.
We didn't, however, know the Tomb Raider reboot’s release date – until now, that is! The studios have finally revealed via Variety that the video game-based movie will arrive on March 16, 2018!
That means we have to wait less than two years for the Tomb Raider reboot. Isn't that exciting? The movie will possibly kick off its filming later this year or in early 2017. At that point, we can expect to come across updates on the movie even more frequently.
But this might not be good news for DC Extended Universe fans. The Flash movie has the same release date, March 16, 2016! Does that mean the Scarlet Speedster's standalone flick will be pushed back?
That seems very likely at the moment. Both Tomb Raider and The Flash belong to Warner Bros., and the studio is never going to release two big movies on the same date. If the movies were from different studios, the release date probably wouldn’t shift for either.
And The Flash movie has faced interruptions since its release date was announced. Seth Grahame-Smith, who was at the helm, walked away from the project due to creative differences with the studio after around six months of being hired.
Rick Famuyiwa has already been signed as the director, but there was a two-month period during which the director's chair stayed empty. That could be a good reason for Warner Bros. to decide to shift The Flash to a later release date.
