With less than three weeks remaining before Suicide Squad rolls into the theaters, the movie's first pre-release tracking has arrived. And it appears that, despite having the WORST HEROES EVER at center stage, the David Ayer flick is set to make some box-office records.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third DC Extended Universe installment is well on its way to bagging a massive $125 million on its opening weekend in North America. The outlet also reports that some box-office analysts see the possibility of Suicide Squad gathering more than $135 million over the August 5-7 weekend.
From what it seems at this point, the movie will comfortably beat James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy to become the new record holder for top August opening to date at the domestic box office. The Marvel Cinematic Universe installment had a $94.3 million North American debut after hitting the theaters on August 1, 2014.
Now, the bigger question that we have is whether Suicide Squad can match or come in ahead of 20th Century Fox's Deadpool. The R-rated X-Men Universe movie bagged no less than $132.4 million in its four-day-long Valentine's Day and Presidents Day opening weekend earlier this year.
Don't forget that the first pre-release tracking for Deadpool suggested that the movie was heading towards a $55-60 million debut, not even half of what it went on to earn!
So, Suicide Squad may have a far bigger or far lesser opening than the tracking suggests. But Warner Bros. would definitely consider this as good news. It is highly unlikely that they would have imagined anything better.
Suicide Squad isn't a movie like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which features two of the most popular superheroes of all time. It's a movie about a band of supervillains. Warner Bros. would surely consider it a win if the movie tops Guardians of the Galaxy, which was a surprise blockbuster for Marvel Studios.
And we mustn't forget that the August 5 release has outpaced highly anticipated movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in terms of the social media buzz they have generated.
What is eventually bagged by Suicide Squad on its opening weekend remains to be seen. But for now, let's enjoy the movie's latest TV spot, featuring the New England Patriots' Rob Gronkowski and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn)!
