Sam Raimi Isn’t Working On Spider-Man 4 (At Least Not Yet)

Is Spider-Man 4 going to happen after all these years? For the time being, director Sam Raimi isn’t working on it…at least not yet. The filmmaker recently addressed rampant speculation/rumors that he might be reuniting with Tobey Maguire for a fourth installment of their version of the franchise. Unfortunately for fans, it’s just rumors for the time being. But Raimi certainly sounds open to the idea.

Raimi, who directed the original Spider-Man trilogy in the early 2000s, spoke with Comic Book Resources at WonderCon. There, he addressed the topic of making a fourth film starring Maguire’s Peter Parker. He explained that he’s read the same rumors everyone else has, but that he’s not working on the film currently. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet. I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story! I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”

“I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures,” Raimi added. “But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”

Indeed, Raimi did direct 2022’s Multiverse of Madness. That movie was a huge hit, taking in more than $950 million at the box office, becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. More importantly, Maguire returned to the Marvel universe in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. That movie grossed more than $1.9 billion worldwide, becoming one of the biggest movies of all time. Ever since, there has been talk of Raimi and Maguire reuniting.

Meanwhile, Sony and Marvel Studios are still trying to figure out Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man movie. Development on the film has been slow despite the success of No Way Home. Whether or not Maguire or Andrew Garfield will return in Holland’s next solo film remains to be seen. There’s also a chance that the actors could return in future adventures in the Marvel multiverse, such as Avengers: Secret Wars.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 does not currently have a release date.
