At a time when Iron Man is arguably the most popular superhero on the planet, it’s worth remembering that, before his 2008 debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (in his self-titled Iron Man solo movie), he really was nothing more than a B-list superhero in Marvel’s comic books.

Don’t get us wrong, Tony Stark has always been a cool character, but he hadn’t previously been anywhere near as popular as he’s been since Robert Downey Jr. took on the role of the character in the MCU.

Something just didn’t click with comic book and superhero fans like it did with the likes of Superman, Batman and Spider-Man – and there has to be a reason for that.

One of the reasons could be that, quite frankly, he has a rather poor rogues gallery – his villains just aren’t as cool or anywhere near as iconic as the likes of Lex Luthor, General Zod, the Joker, Bane, the Green Goblin and Venom.

He does have a few decent villains – the Mandarin and Iron Monger spring to mind, for example – but, on the whole, they’re poor and not very well known.

As a result, they’re much harder to recognise than the villains in certain other characters’ rogues galleries.

With that in mind, it would take a huge fan of Marvel to recognise them all. Can you do it?
