Doctor Strange might still have a week before it releases, but Scott Derrickson has admitted that he’s thinking about what he would offer in a sequel if it’s officially greenlighted by Marvel and he's hired to return. And now, in a more recent interview with IGN, the director reveals which character he would like to use as the potential project’s villain.
What are your guesses? Karl Mordo? Dormammu? Well, it's neither of them! The villain Derrickson wants in Doctor Strange 2 was introduced by Marvel Comics in the same Stranger Tales #110 issue that brought in the Sorcerer Supreme himself: the evil ruler of the Dream Dimension, Nightmare! The director says:
I really like the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension…That's early - that's like the first Strange tale. I think that's in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that.
Why did Derrickson refrain from using Nightmare in the November 4, 2016 release? Well, the director does explain that. What he also makes clear is that he might be okay with bringing in the supervillain in a third Doctor Strange movie instead of the second one. He just wants to explore the character and the concept. According to Derrickson:
We decided not to do that because that's a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension. I hope somewhere down the line we do get to explore that because I think that's super cool concept.
Doctor Strange has already garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews from the critics, but it remains to be seen how it performs at the box office. The amount of money that it bags in its opening weekend will perhaps be the deciding factor for Marvel to proceed with a sequel immediately.
