Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Gets Release Date On New Max Streaming Service

That didn’t take long! It has been confirmed by Warner Bros. that Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be arriving on the new Max streaming service on May 23. Max is the recently revealed name for what is currently known as HBO Max. The service will combine HBO Max and Discovery+ under one roof. The service will launch on May 23 as well, and it will do so with the most recent entry in the DC Universe for subscribers to enjoy.

Director David F. Sandberg’s sequel only just hit theaters on March 17, making for a pretty quick turnaround. The film is already available on VOD through marketplaces such as Amazon Prime Video and Google Play as well. Much of that has to do with the fact that Fury of the Gods majorly disappointed at the box office. As of this writing, the film has only earned $128 million worldwide against a $125 million budget. It will go down as one of the lowest-grossing DC movies in history.

The first Shazam! was released in 2019 and remains one of DC’s best-reviewed movies ever. It was also a commercial success, taking in $365 million worldwide against a $100 million budget. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, however, wasn’t met with the same reception. It currently holds a mere 50% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score is much better at 86% percent, but that wasn’t enough to save it. Meanwhile, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are prepping a reboot of the DC Universe beginning next year.

Here is the synopsis for Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

“Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.”

Returning members of the cast include Zachary Levi (Chuck) as Shazam, Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer (It) as Freddy Freeman, Adam Brody (Promising Young Woman) as Superhero Freddy, Ross Butler (Riverdale) as Superhero Eugene, Meagan Good (Day Shift) as Superhero Darla, D.J. Cotrona (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) as Superhero Pedro, Grace Caroline Currey (Annabelle: Creation) as Mary Bromfield, Faithe Herman (This Is Us) as Darla Dudley, Ian Chen (A Dog’s Journey) as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand (Second Chances) as Pedro Pena, Marta Milans (White Lines) as Rosa Vasquez, Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) as Victor Vasquez, and Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator) as Wizard. Newcomers for the sequel include Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Lucy Liu (Kung Fu Panda) and Helen Mirren (1923).

The film is produced by Peter Safran (Aquaman) Henry Gayden (Shazam!) and Chris Morgan (Hobbs & Shaw) penned the screenplay. Walter Hamada, Adam Schlagman, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Victoria Palmeri, Marcus Viscidi and Geoff Johns serve as executive producers.
