Will Hugh Jackman Play Wolverine Again In The MCU?

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine - Marvel Studios

Hugh Jackman isn’t done with Wolverine, it seems. For years, Jackman said 2017’s Logan was his last ride as the Marvel hero. It made sense, as Logan provided a fitting end for his version of the character. However, last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine brought him back for at least one more ride. Now though, the actor suggests that his time donning the claws is far from over.

During a recent interview with Variety for the “Actors on Actors” series, Jackman was speaking with Wicked: For Good star Cynthia Erivo. During the conversation, she asked if the actor was done playing Wolverine. He made it pretty clear that he’s not. Here’s what Jackman had to say.

“It doesn’t feel like the end. It really felt like the end after Logan. Actually, I needed to claim it as the end, because I really believed in some things that I wanted that movie to be, and I had to fight for them. I had to say, ‘This is the last time I’m doing it.’ Then when I saw Deadpool, I was like, ‘Oh. I see 48 Hrs. I see Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte.’ But I would shove it down. ‘I’ve told everyone that I’m done. I’m not one of those guys.’ Then I went, ‘You know what? I change my mind. It’s not that big of a deal. I’m not even gonna say I’m sorry.’ And it was so awesome.”

Deadpool & Wolverine was a massive success. It took in more than $1.3 billion at the box office and stands as the biggest R-rated movie ever. Jackman seemingly had a great time, so why stop now? Especially since there’s ample opportunity to bring him back as a member of the X-Men in the future.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters next year. Though Jackman wasn’t part of the initial casting announcement, he could easily appear as a surprise. Even if he’s not in that movie, Avengers: Secret Wars is set to close out the Multiverse Saga in 2027. That feels like a very logical place for Jackman to lend his talents.

Here is the synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday.

“Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse.”

Aside from that, Ryan Reynolds also confirmed he’s writing some sort of Deadpool project. It would make a lot of sense for him to team up with Wolverine once again. Or, at the very least, feature him in some sort of cameo. Either way, it’s easy to see the opportunity on the page for more Jackman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Disney is willing to pay him to do it, it seems he’d be happy to sign on the dotted line.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027.
