#5: Ackee Fruit (Unripe)

Ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica and tastes wonderful when ripe, but unripe versions contain hypoglycins A and B, which cause severe vomiting, hypoglycemia, and organ damage. Only eat ackee that’s naturally opened on the tree and fully red; never force open an unopened fruit. If you’re buying it fresh outside Jamaica, it should already be properly ripened.
