The Witcher season 4 just arrived on Netflix. In many ways, this is the beginning of the end for the show. Liam Hemsworth is taking over as Geralt in season 4. Henry Cavill originated the role in season 1, leaving the role behind after season 3. Hemsworth, meanwhile, is getting one more crack at it as he will return for the fifth and final season of the show.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, showrunner and series creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich confirmed that The Witcher season 5 has wrapped filming already. Netflix had previously confirmed that season 5 would be the show’s last. Speaking with the outlet, Hissrich had the the following to say about it.
“The good news is I won’t say goodbye to it quite yet, because I’m in post[-production] for a very long time for season five. I expected to have this period of mourning, frankly. That first sort of Monday morning that you wake up and you don’t know where to go… you’re not going to see these people that you see every day. I kept waiting for that to hit me.”
“What happened sort of more and more is this celebration of what we were able to do. I don’t think a lot of shows get to do five seasons of a show. I also don’t think that a lot of shows get the sort of privilege of knowing when they’re going to end,” Hissrich added. “Especially with all the adversity with lead changes, [changing] studios halfway through – we’ve shot in, I think, 11 different countries. But we did it, and we survived. And I think that is what everyone honestly feels – this sense of celebration that we accomplished this.”
Netflix has made the most of this franchise since its inception. Earlier this year, they released the animated film The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. The streaming service also released the spin-off series The Witcher: Blood Origin in December 2022. Not to mention another anime film titled Nightmare of the Wolf in 2021.
As for why it’s ending? Well, all good things do eventually end. Cavill moved on to other creative pursuits. For a time, it looked like he was going to return as Superman before the franchise was rebooted with David Corenswet in the role. Caill has stayed busy, starring in Voltron, Enola Holmes 3 and the upcoming Highlander reboot, among other projects. Any show that loses its lead actor is at a disadvantage. It’s impressive that Netflix managed to get two more seasons with Hemsworth taking over.
Here is the synopsis for The Witcher season 4.
“After the Continent-altering events of Season Three, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri find themselves separated by a raging war and countless enemies. As their paths diverge, and their goals sharpen, they stumble on unexpected allies eager to join their journeys. And if they can accept these found families, they just might have a chance at reuniting for good…”
