Director Bryan Singer says that the version of Wolverine seen in X-Men: Apocalypse is completely different from anything fans have seen before. And that’s because this time they’ll see the character in full berserker rage mode.
According to Singer, this Wolverine won't just come out of the tank. Instead, he will be the Weapon X we see in the comics. In regard to the same topic, Simon Kinberg said that Wolverine was originally supposed to be introduced in the middle of the movie and be something of a drill sergeant for the younger mutants. An alternate version of the script had the kids kidnapped by Stryker and sent to the Alkali Lake, where Wolverine was also being kept (thus giving him the opportunity to save them).
Here's a question: Was that really Stryker? His eyes did glow when Wolverine was retrieved from the Potomac at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
So, according to Bryan Singer, the latter possibility made it into the final film. We all expected to see the berserker during the final Wolverine flick (which will be released on the 3rd of March, and is supposed to adapt the Old Man Logan storyline). But the director decided (maybe for the better) that X-Men: Apocalypse was the best time for this.
Simon Kinberg also said that there is a special moment between Wolverine and the young Jean Grey the first time they meet, thus suggesting a (sort of) continuity between the new trilogy and the first X-Men movies.
