The last trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse brought with it the biggest surprise of them all - and it was a surprise, even if we all expected it: Wolverine is back! Ending with a perfect shot of the clawed hand, we found out that the no-nonsense mutant will have something more than just a First Class cameo in the movie.
However"¦
The most recent rumors concerning the future of the X-Men say that Wolverine will be replaced. And it’s a given, because in 2017 we’ll see an adaptation of the Old Man Logan storyline that will bring the end of the Wolverine solo trilogy. But the very same rumors also say that the change will be set in motion with X-Men: Apocalypse. Thus, there are two possibilities.
The first one is that a new character will be introduced in X-Men: Apocalypse, a character who will play an important part in the final Wolverine flick - either X-23 or Daken (we don't know what supports this theory, since neither mutant has the claws we saw in the trailer). The other possibility is that the clawed hand doesn't even belong to Hugh Jackman, but rather to the new Wolverine! As in: The change has already been made and Hugh Jackman is already gone and has been replaced!?
In support of this last possibility, we can say that Robert Meyer Burnett (Collider Heroes and friend of Bryan Singer, who has already seen X-Men: Apocalypse) posted this cryptic message on Twitter when asked about Wolverine and Hugh Jackman's last solo film:
There is a very interesting question that might arise in some people's minds – that has something to do with, you know – people should stay through the credits in X-Men: Apocalypse.
Did we say cryptic? Well, it’s more than that - it’s downright confusing!
X-Men: Apocalypse will be released on the 27th of May. We will find out then, we guess.
It would be a huge (and interesting) surprise if Hugh Jackman has already been replaced.
