It seems that Warner Bros has given into the fans' demands, as far as the director of Wonder Woman is concerned. Ever since the project was first announced, everybody said that the first solo superheroine movie should have a woman in the director's chair. And a couple of days ago the studio announced her.
Who is she?
The new director (who will also have a word to say as far as the script is concerned) is Michelle MacLaren - which would seem a bold choice for the studio. How come? Given the names which were rumored at first, while she was a fan favorite, she certainly doesn't have the credentials other female directors have - for example, Kathryn Bigelow was also a fan favorite for directing Wonder Woman (you might know her for the very-very good The Hurt Locker and the equally surprising Zero Dark Thirty).
Wonder Woman is the first major film to be helmed by Michelle MacLaren, since until now she has only directed television series and a couple of films released directly on video.
What series did she direct?
While she started directing an episode of the "˜90's cult hit X-Files, the new director of Wonder Woman made a name for herself with three of the best television series of the recent years.
Between 2009 and 2013, Michelle MacLaren directed 11 episodes for Breaking Bad. She also directed 3 episodes for The Walking Dead (between 2010 and 2014). The third major television hit where she was found behind the camera is Game of Thrones, for which she directed 4 episodes, in 2013 and 2014.
Does she have the chops for such a big project?
If we are to look at other blockbusters (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) or at other major films to be released (Star Wars, Jurassic World), Michelle MacLaren is right on the spot and she can be included easily in the line of some of the most talented directors of her generation.
Of course, the success of Wonder Woman doesn't rest only on her shoulders, since she will only twitch the script. Furthermore, Zack Snyder will be involved too, as a producer this time.
