We finally know now who will fill Angelina Jolie's shoes in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot! And it's NOT Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Daisy Ridley. Variety and multiple other outlets have confirmed that MGM, Warner Bros., and GK Films have signed Alicia Vikander to portray Lara Croft in the Roar Uthaug flick!
Once she had stepped into the limelight with the latest Star Wars movie, Daisy Ridley had grown into a fan-favorite choice for the lead role in Tomb Raider reboot. The actress, too, expressed her interest. Some are suggesting that she was never a real contender for the role. But according to some others, she had met with the studio.
Suicide Squad star Cara Delevingne was reportedly up for the Tomb Raider reboot's lead role. Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and The Grand Budapest Hotel star Saoirse Ronan were rumored to be frontrunners, too, at some point. However, according to some of the outlets, Alicia Vikander was always the studios' first choice.
Well, it's not that hard to grasp why she's been picked. The Swedish actress gained global recognition for portraying Vera Brittain in Testament of Youth and Ava in Ex Machina. And then she won an Academy Award – Best Supporting Actress for playing Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl.
So, Vikander's resume is obviously much more compelling than that of Daisy Ridley, who was not a known face in Hollywood before The Force Awakens; or that of Cara Delevingne, who has still a lot to prove as an actress.
The Tomb Raider reboot’s release date is yet to be announced. However, if the latest rumor is to be believed, the movie will hit the theaters on October 6, 2017. That’s the release date Warner Bros has slated for an untitled event film.
