Here’s What Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 Is About

We literally waited years with essentially no information about Spider-Man 4. Now, we know for sure it’s happening. We know that Tom Holland is coming back as Peter Parker. We know that it’s coming out in 2026. We know that it’s going to be part of the Multiverse Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what’s it going to be about? Producer Amy Pascal has addressed that question directly.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Pascal talked about the currently untitled Spider-Man 4. Granted, she couldn’t say much by way of specifics, but she did confirm that production is happening in 2025. She also spoke highly of director Destin Danile Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

“We’re starting shooting the next Spider-Man movie with Destin Daniel Cretton,” Pascal said. “He’s a wonderful director. I love No Mercy, I love Short Term 12, I love Shang-Chi. I think he did a wonderful job.” When addressing what the movie is actually about, Pascal offered what she could. While the producer didn’t get into spoilers, she suggested it will address the big ending in 2021’s No Way Home.

“Well, we have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker. And he was going to focus on being Spider-Man because being Peter Parker was too hard. That’s what the movie is about.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the biggest movies of all time, and a big multiversal spectacle. It ended with Doctor Strange making everyone in the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. More than that, nobody would even remember that they knew Peter in the first place. So what Pascal says makes sense. Unfortunately, she couldn’t go into further detail, such as revealing who the villain will be.

One thing we know for sure is that the film will be sandwiched between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. That being the case, it’s easy to imagine that the sequel will be big, with big stakes. It’s hard to imagine a street-level adventure set in the middle of two giant Avengers movies. For now, we still have more questions than answers.

Jon Watts directed Holland’s previous three Spider-Man films. Holland’s contract with Marvel and Sony was also up after No Way Home. He was under no obligation to return. He’s also an in-demand star who has other projects he wants to tackle. That’s part of the reason it took so long to finally get this movie going. We’ll surely be learning more as production draws nearer. Stay tuned.

Spider-Man 4 is currently set to hit theaters on July 26, 2026.
