The new DC Universe is good and truly underway. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has revealed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has officially begun filming. This is set to be the second movie in the new DCU following Gunn’s own Superman movie, which hits theaters this summer. After David Corenswet makes his debut as our new Man of Steel, it will be Milly Alcock’s turn to take center stage as her Kryptonian cousin, Kara Zor-El.
Gunn has offered us a tiny glimpse at Alcock as filming has kicked off. We see the House of the Dragon actress in a chair with the S logo on the back. It’s admittedly not much to go on. Unfortunately, we don’t get a glimpse at Kara in costume and the background is pretty blurry. There are some bright neon lights, however. Feel free to speculate about what’s going on there.

“Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El,” Gunn said in his post. “Craig brings an incredible sensibility to this story, and Milly is every inch the unique #Supergirl envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely & Ana Nogueira.”
As Gunn states, Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is in the director’s chair for this one. As for the cast, the biggest news is that Jason Momoa is set to play the villain Lobo. Previously, Momoa played Aquaman in the DCEU. Zack Snyder spearheaded that universe. Warner Bros. is rebooting DC under the direction of Gunn and Safran, meaning all of the core roles will be recast. We’re getting a new Batman. We’ll probably get a new Wonder Woman as well. That freed Momoa up for a new challenge.
The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) as Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as Ruthye Marye Knoll. David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer) and Emily Beecham (Cruella) are on board as Supergirl’s parents. As Gunn also explained, the film takes its title from the popular 2021 comic book of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira penned the screenplay.
Here is the synopsis for the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic.
“Kara Zor-El can no longer find any meaning or purpose in her life. But all that changes when an alien girl seeks her out to help her take revenge on the bad guys who destroyed her world. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core. It’s Supergirl like you’ve never seen her before in a character-defining sci-fi/fantasy masterpiece!”
Gunn, Safran and WB have an ambitious slate of movies and TV shows on deck for the DC Universe. On the movie side, we have The Brave and the Bold, The Authority, Teen Titans and James Mangold’s horror-tinged Swamp Thing, among others, in the works. TV shows such as Waller, Booster Gold and Peacemaker season 2 are in the works as well. Some characters from the previous universe are being carried over, but what is or isn’t canon is still being determined. The hope is that they can find a way to make it not confusing for the average viewer.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
