Deadpool and Logan proved that R-rated superhero movies can work, both at the box office and with the critics. So it’s only natural that more and more movies of this type will begin to appear. For example, the second Suicide Squad movie is expected to be rated R (the first one should have been rated R, too). However, there are other comic book characters – not as widely known as those mentioned above – who deserve a shot (or a second shot, in this case) on the big screen.
Spawn was popular during the nineties, and a movie starring Michael Jai White as the titular character was made in 1997. It bombed with critics and at the box office. The flick was indeed atrocious, even during a time that wasn’t considered a golden age for superhero movies.
The dark hero will have his second shot, although we don’t know when the reboot will happen. Creator Todd McFarlane said that this new film won't be rated PG-13, even though the first one was. Rather, it's going to be dark and nasty, as a movie about a hellspawn should be. Via Screen Rant:

PG-13 superhero flicks may rule at the box office, but they’re much more expensive to make. On the other hand, R-rated films, such as Logan and Deadpool, are much cheaper and quicker to turn a profit.
Again, a movie about a being from hell should be rated R, and there plenty of moviegoers enjoy flicks of this type.
