If you thought that marketing New Mutants as a horror movie was a marketing strategy, then think again! If you thought that director Josh Boone's credentials didn't recommend him for such a film, think again! The first X-Men: New Mutants trailer has been released, and it has everything a horror flick should have, from creepy atmosphere, to kids, to jump scares.
Sure, we can't say that we know how some of the cast members will perform, but this is just a first teaser trailer! Enjoy it below! We know we did!
Based on this clip alone, it’s interesting that, beyond one line of dialogue mentioning mutants, there’s no sign that this is an X-Men film. This could actually be a recipe for success, since it separates New Mutants from the sometimes disappointing core X-Men franchise.
Deadpool was a huge hit for 20th Century Fox, since it kept as clear as possible of the drama that comes with the X-Men movies. Logan was another hit, because James Mangold came up with the idea to make a film solely about Wolverine and avoid connections to the X-Men films as much as possible. Sure, each movie had characters who were also present in the core series, but the idea that Fox had successfully tried something new stuck.
That’s the case with X-Men: New Mutants, too. We can expect upcoming trailers and clips to bring in some players from other movies, revealing the mutants’ actual powers. But, judging from this first preview, 20th Century Fox seems determined to try new things in the shared universe.
Directed by Josh Boone and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga, X-Men: New Mutants will be released on April 13, 2018.
