Following the success of Deadpool and Logan, which were both rated R, 20th Century Fox is moving forward with several additional movies with connections to the X-Men. According to various reports, X-Men: The New Mutants will blend horror with comedy in what’s described as a Stephen King meets John Hughes film. This is great news, especially if Demon Bear is the film’s main antagonist.
Will the studio move forward with an R-rated New Mutants flick? Not necessarily, although we would be very happy if it did.
The plot and other major details have been kept secret, although we believe that Magik, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Warlock will be on the New Mutants team roster. No official casting announcements have been made, but rumors say that Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) will portray Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) has nabbed another lead role.
Another rumor has it that James McAvoy will also cameo as Professor X.
Most recently, My Entertainment World (via Screen Rant) revealed that shooting for The New Mutants will begin as soon as the 4th of June in Massachusetts. So we might expect a cast announcement in the next few weeks.
It makes sense for pre-production to come to an end and for shooting to begin at that point if you take the projected release date into account. Reportedly, director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars, the upcoming The Stand) is working hard behind the scenes to have everything ready in time for filming. We'll have to wait a while longer to learn who’s been cast in the movie’s various roles.
For now, X-Men: The New Mutants has no scheduled release date, but the studio is aiming for a 2018 debut.
