With a month and a half remaining before Ghost in the Shell rolls into theaters, Paramount Pictures has launched a brand new trailer for the movie.
We’ve already seen a trailer and a couple of promotional clips for the upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese manga. However, they were predominantly visual, with little information about the plot.
The latest Ghost in the Shell trailer does provide us with a good sense of the story. It becomes clear from the trailer that the Rupert Sanders flick will delve more deeply into the past of its protagonist, The Major, who is a highly trained cyborg played by Scarlett Johansson.
The new trailer also introduces Kuze, the cyborg villain portrayed by Michael Pitt. Check it out below!
Ghost in the Shell had been in development since 2008, but the cameras didn’t start rolling until February of last year. Even with the movie nearing its release, Paramount is still being accused of "whitewashing" for casting Johansson in the lead role.
The 32-year-old actress recently addressed the controversy during an interview with Marie Claire:
I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive. Also, having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunity. Certainly, I feel the enormous pressure of that"”the weight of such a big property on my shoulders.
Other movies have been the center of similar controversy, including Gods of Egypt and The Great Wall. They failed to impress either critics or the general audience. But then, there's Doctor Strange. Despite being accused of whitewashing for casting Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, that movie did very well, both at the box office and with critics. The studio must have their fingers crossed for the same result for Ghost in the Shell.
