At this moment, it appears that Logan will be one of the best comic book movies ever. The movie has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 93 percent. It’s already been termed the best X-Men flick to date, which says a lot, given other X-Men flicks that were previously released.
Tracked for a $65 million debut in the US alone, Logan is set to shred box office competitors during its opening weekend. This might not seem like much when it’s compared to behemoths like Star Wars, but it’s actually quite good for an R-rated movie. Sure, it doesn't come close to Deadpool's amazing $132 million debut, but it’s quite impressive.
And that’s not all. Deadline reports that Logan is set to make $105 million more in other territories during the same weekend, thus raising the bar to $170 million worldwide. This is particularly impressive, considering that this is still an X-Men universe film. So this is indeed a very beautiful swan song for Hugh Jackman in this role.
Of course, these are just estimates, based on the interest shown by the fans online. The numbers could increase. It’s happened with other releases.
But will Logan reign supreme at the box office throughout the month? Chances of that are slight, since quite a few other big releases are scheduled for March. Kong: Skull Island is set to tower over all other releases the following week, while Disney's Beauty and the Beast will probably be this year’s first flick to join the select billion-dollar club (excluding, of course, Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).
Furthermore, Power Rangers will also be released this March (although we doubt it will be a serious competitor), while the end of the month will see the Ghost in the Shell release.
Logan is set to make big money in its opening weekend, but it will almost certainly fall behind the following weekend (as a comparison, Deadpool had no competition during its release weekend and beyond, until Zootopia was released).
