Logan: Liev Schreiber was Contacted about Returning as Sabretooth

Logan, the second R-rated X-Men shared universe hit, took in over $600 million at the worldwide box office. While it wasn't as successful as Deadpool from this point of view, it was really a far better movie. Nonetheless, people always find something to complain about, and some are saying that Logan was a missed opportunity. Since family was one of the movie’s themes, many have pointed out that the final outing in the Wolverine saga should have brought closure to the relationship between the mutant and his brother, Victor Creed.

Sabretooth (Go4More)

Both James Mangold and Hugh Jackman evidently thought about this possibility. Liev Schreiber told Variety that he received phone calls from both men about reprising his X-Men Origins: Wolverine role, but his busy schedule prevented him from joining the rest of the cast.

There was an invitation early on from Hugh [Jackman] and [director James Mangold], and I would have loved to work on it. It was very difficult given Ray Donovan's schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story. I think it's a terrific movie. I'm just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire.

If this was going to be a cameo role, it was indeed a missed opportunity, because in the debacle that X-Men Origins: Wolverine was, Liev Schreiber's Sabretooth was one of the movie's redeeming features.

But if Schreiber was supposed to have a bigger part, maybe his absence was for the better. We feel that, having Wolverine face himself at the end of the movie brought true closure to the hero's saga.
