Gaiman’s Key Role in Sandman’s Production

The two facts that wrap the haze around Sandman: its production was made public in the late 2013, and its premiere is due in 2016. In the meanwhile one year has passed and fans started to wonder. Questions popped up and rumors spread. Rightfully, I might add, since the team behind the new version of Sandman hardly speaks about their progress.

What the community of fans knows for sure is Sandman will not join Warner Bros.' DC Comics world. It will, instead, be a part of a different universe of productions, i.e. Vertigo Comics. However, questions remain unanswered and we're all at a loos: who signs the screenplay in the end? Did they clearly decide between Neil Gaiman and Jack Thorne? Who else is involved in production? Is the premiere going to be put off?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt vouches for progress

Jack Thorne works on the screenplay, a task he undertook in February 2014, and while not much is heard about his developments, Joseph Gordon-Levitt guarantees he is part of the team. At the same time, big words about Neil Gaiman were uttered: "he's the one I want to please most", says Gordon-Levitt.

David S. Goyer confirms Neil Gaiman's key involvement

No clear deadline was set up for the screenplay. David S. Goyer himself is not positive about when they'll start shooing Sandman. Just like Gordon-Levitt, he seems fully confident and grateful: "Neil Gaiman has been in the room with us and is a vital part of the team".

He weighs in a lot, apparently, and his success was validated by Warner Bro.'s reception of the preliminary draft of the script. And even if we can safely assume the studio was not exactly on cloud nine, they were pleased with the submitted draft. A reaction that encouraged the team behind Sandman to go public and break the news to comics aficionados. Goyer also hinted on the originality of the remake, a merit completely owed to Gaiman.

What about that Kevin Turen?

The last bit of info Goyer revealed is Phantom Four's president in the making, Kevin Turen, is also involved in the Sandman project. If it all goes well, Sandman will be one of the proud titles on his prize list. All in all, neither Gordon-Levitt nor Goyer were able to say precisely when Sandman will go before cameras. Or whether 2016 is a realistic deadline for their project and for the already announced premiere.
