Fast And Furious Has Spin-Offs and Prequels In Development

Furious 8 is in development, and even if this eighth installment was supposed to be the first of a trilogy meant to bring the end of the series, things might take a turn for the better. Being such a big hit, with $1.5 billion cashed after Furious 7, the idea of creating a series of Fast and Furious spin-offs seems glibly. In fact, the project is already in the works and Vin Diesel came to confirm it in an interview for Variety.

The spin-offs will focus on telling stories of various characters, maybe going back to their origins and turn into prequels, much like what we see that Marvel and DC are doing in their Cinematic Universe. But here's how Vin Diesel described the path of these spin-offs to Variety:

"We've written out story lines for various characters. We've been playing with it for a long time. It's a very rich property and we're committed to treating it with a lot of class." (via Cinemablend)

Fast&Furious will go on with three more installments

The Fast and Furious films have always offered a great amount of action to their public. The fans demanded more and more stunts and the franchise relied on this. Anyway, as Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman Jeff Shell points out, this cannot last forever, so they have to bring something new while keeping the origins alive and not excluding the stunts totally:

"You can't keep having every movie have bigger and bigger stunts forever and ever and ever. Eventually you have to really focus on the story. We'll still have big stunts but bringing in this amazing storyteller is going to be great."

Characters who have died in Fast and Furious have a chance to come back

So, if the Fast and Furious spin-offs/prequels will rely more on the story of the characters, we wonder which characters. First choice would be Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto, as he's been there since 2001, and then there are Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez. Maybe this will be an opportunity to bring back characters that have died on screen, like Gal Gadot's Gisele.

Furious 8 is in development with director F. Gary Gray in charge and scheduled to premiere April 14, 2017.

What do you think about the continuation of the Fast and Furious series in the form of films centered on the story of the characters?
