After the Fantastic Mess Four reboot, everybody is wondering: will Fox move with its plans for a 2017 sequel? The box office result for this year's Fantastic Four, the fans' reaction, the critical reaction - everything, literally, says that it won't happen. But, so far, there is no official response to this question.
The most reasonable thing to do for the studio, if they want to keep the rights for the franchise, is to wait another 8 years and start from scratch all over again (we simply cannot believe that they will make a deal with Marvel, like Sony did for Spider-Man). But, when money is involved, reason has nothing to do with it. And when Simon Kinberg says that the X-Men will go cosmic and that they will crossover with other Fox properties (he named just Deadpool and Gambit, but we all read between the lines), we actually believe that Fantastic Four will get a sequel.
It may not be in 2017 - but it will be one nonetheless. So what did the producer/writer said about Fantastic Four specifically?
Simon Kinberg - too busy with the X-Men franchise. But"¦
In an interview with MTV, Simon Kinberg (who also wrote, produced, and even directed the Fantastic Four reshoots) said that he was in fact too busy with X-Men: Apocalypse to actually think about the future of the Fantastic Four franchise.
However, he did express his disappointment. He did say that his disappointment came from the fans panning the movie (but we all know that he was rather upset of the reboot not making money). And that he did want to make a good movie - what prevented him from doing that? Who knows!
And here comes the but: "I do believe there is a great Fantastic Four movie that we've made with that cast. So I'm gonna figure out what that is." (via Screen Rant). Where did that came from? We have no idea. Probably from the same place where the reshoots came"¦
So does that mean that Fantastic Four 2 will still happen? Check out the next page for Kinberg's answer!
Yes
"We're figuring out what that movie would be. I'd like that to happen."
Of course, he didn't explicitly say that it will happen, but we can all read between the lines: Fantastic Four 2 is coming and nothing can stop it!
The most obvious question is: why would someone who contributed to this year's debacle be in charge with the sequel? We get it - Days of Future Past and First Class were pretty cool movies, and we do have high hopes for Apocalypse. However, the Fantastic Four reboot is, most likely, the worst comic book movie ever - even worse than Batman and Robin (who was at least campy and didn't try to be serious). So why would Kinberg have any role in the sequel?
On the next page, a possible answer!
CREAM
As the Wu-Tang said, cash does rule everything around. And Fox is still willing to bet on Kinberg - after all, from a financial point of view, he is responsible just for one bad movie. So, from this point of view, Fantastic Four might just be considered a fluke.
And then they just can't wait. The Fantastic Four still have plenty of fans - so they will probably search for the best formula. The rights cannot revert to Marvel and a deal is out of the question, since the X-Men franchise is actually very bankable.
But what do you think? Should Fox move on with a Fantastic Four sequel?
