According to del Toro, Pacific Rim 2 will not be an immediate follow-up of its forerunner, rather the plot is set some years after the first one. The story starts putting on view the world having been freed of the Kaiju and the monsters are no longer a threat.

Very Different Kaijus To Appear

Obviously, starting with a world free of Kaijus, doesn't mean that the monsters won't appear in the entire movie. You will get to see Kaijus, but not the same ones that you saw in Pacific Rim. The director states, "but the Kaijus are very different and you're gonna see a very different type of the robots I think." He claimed that movie's going to be "quite a different adventure."

Almost a month ago, del Toro revealed that not all characters from Pacific Rim will return, rather some of them will sidelined in Pacific Rim 2 to come back in the third movie. Now, the director reveals two names that are surely going to appear in the second of the planned trilogy. The names are Dr. Hermann Gottlieb played by Burn Gorman and Dr. Newton Geiszler played by Charlie Day. The director doesn't mention anything about Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh Becket, Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost and Rinko Kikiuchi's Mako Mori. If they don't appear in Pacific Rim 2, you might have to wait till third installment to see them.
