In its opening week, Deadpool made about five times its budget worldwide - surely this must have convinced the studio to invest more in the sequel. After all, this is the usual mindset when it comes to Hollywood - the second part must always be bigger, louder, and way more expensive.
Will this be the case with Deadpool 2, especially since it will bring Cable into the mix? Will Fox grant the sequel a bigger budget and try to bring as many X-Men mutants as possible into the fold? Well, seeing the trend, people might believe it will happen.
But it won't, according to Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (who penned the first outing of the Merc with a Mouth). And that is because having a much bigger budget brings with it too many restrictions (after all, this is a business, and the studio will want its money back).
So, according to the writers, the second Deadpool won't see too big a change:
I think there's a real conceptual difference between taking other characters and big things and bringing them into Deadpool's reasonably small, gritty world and the opposite, taking Deadpool and placing him among big ensembles who are fighting aliens or in the future where he and Cable are doing something in the future. I think if Cable and Deadpool team up, it will likely be in Deadpool's world.
So, basically, the sequel will also be a self-contained movie, even if it will reference the larger, shared universe. But there is another reason the writers believe that the sequel should also be a small movie (as far as the budget is concerned). And that is because Deadpool isn't exactly a superhero, fighting all sorts of supervillains and trying to save the world from aliens, insane AIs and so on.
That's not who he is. So don't expect a $150 million budget for the second part. Is this a good thing? Well, we did see what this kind of freedom meant this year - so yeah, it is a good thing!
