Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first look at the new Man of Steel. Director James Gunn has shared the first official photo from his new Superman movie. It features David Corenswet (Pearl) putting on his suit as something mysterious is happening in Metropolis. More importantly, it offers our first full look at Corenswet in costume as the legendary DC Comics superhero. Check it out for yourself.
Gunn took to the social media site Threads to share the photo. He captioned it, rather simply, with the words “Get ready.” It’s unclear what the mysterious light in the sky is behind Superman in the picture. One thing that is clear is that the character has on his iconic trunks. Henry Cavill’s Superman didn’t wear the trunks in Man of Steel. So this is a major change. “The above photo was taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera,” Gunn added of the first look. So whatever that light in the sky is, it’s not accomplished with CGI. That is interesting, given how heavy these movies often are on CGI.
Here is the synopsis for Superman.
“[Superman] tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Gunn, who is best known as the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, took over as the co-head of DC Studios early last year. He and Peter Safran laid out an ambitious plan to reboot the DC Universe. That begins with Gunn’s new Superman, which was originally titled Superman: Legacy. Other movies in the works include Swamp Thing, Teen Titans, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will star Milly Alcock in the lead role. Several TV shows including Lanterns, Booster Gold, Waller and the animated Creature Commandos are also in the works as part of the reboot.
The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer) and Wendell Pierce (Perry White.) Gunn wrote the screenplay in addition to directing.
Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
