Not many might know that a Jessica Jones television series was under development five years ago for ABC and Melissa Rosenberg, who is also the showrunner of the latest Marvel series on Netflix, was in charge of that one. That series, however, never gained traction and now eventually Jessica Jones has launched on the online streaming site.
While talking to IGN of late, Melissa revealed that she was planning to use Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, in the original series for ABC. She stated:
"Back when it was at ABC Network, I did use Carol Danvers."
The Jessica Jones showrunner has also revealed why that didn't happen. Scroll down to the next segment to get details!
Why Was Captain Marvel Replaced With Patsy Walker?
As you might have already assumed by now, Patsy Walker - the character which is played by Rachel Taylor in Jessica Jones - replaced Captain Marvel for the series. Melissa referred to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's shifting away from Marvel Comics Universe as the reason why she had to switch from the one female character to the other. Here's how she explained:
"But between then and when it ended up on Netflix, you know, the MCU shifted, and it also shifted away from the universe in the [comic] book. So in the book, the powers are very out in the open and the themes of that are about "˜the other,' and in the cinematic universe that's not the mythology."
Melissa Rosenberg claimed that was why she found a lot that she had to move away from just "˜in terms of sheer plot'.
Patsy Walker Ended Up Being A Better Fit For Jessica Jones!
And Melissa believes that swapping Carol Danvers with Patsy Walker was the right thing to do as the character is "˜an incredible - a much more appropriate fit with' Jessica Jones. She added:
"It was better that her best friend was not someone with powers. It actually ends up being a really great mirror for her."
