While fans wished to see Bryan Cranston, who is best known for his roles in the AMC series Breaking Bad and in movies like Trumbo and Argo, portraying Lex Luthor in the DC Extended Universe, it appears that Warner Bros. wanted to cast him in a different role. While speaking to AMC's video series Geeking Out (via Screen Rant), the actor reveals that he was approached for the role of the iconic supporting character from Batman comics, Commissioner Jim Gordon.
But it wasn't the studio that changed their minds. Rather, Cranston himself passed on it! He did so because he wants to portray a character who hasn't been played in the past. He explains:
I'm interested in creating a role. I'd love to do something that hasn't been done before. Lex Luthor, there's been a lot of that. I've been asked to take a look at Commissioner Gordon. It's like, I would be one in several, and I would kind of like to carve out a new identity.
Fans may not be that disappointed about Bryan Cranston refusing to portray Commissioner Gordon, as the role eventually went to Academy Award winning actor J.K. Simmons. Cranston is still interested in playing a particular supervillain, but not one from DC Comics lore. He adds:
Mister Sinister has always been someone"¦that would be very cool.
Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister, is a Marvel Comics supervillain whose film rights belong to 20th Century Fox. The post-credits scene of this year's X-Men: Apocalypse did seem to indicate that the big baddie exists in the universe and is about to appear.
We have also come across several reports about the character appearing in the untitled third installment of the Wolverine series. While Bryan Singer seemed to confirm his arrival, Wolverine 3 director James Mangold acted as if he didn't even know who the supervillain was!
This isn't the first time Cranston has expressed his interest in playing Mister Sinister. He did so around a year ago while speaking at New York Comic Con.
Thanks to Boss Logic, we even have a fan art piece showing how the actor would look as the supervillain. Check it out below!
