Tons of projects based on Marvel characters have been announced by various studios, and some of them are quite surprising. Venom, with Tom Hardy in the lead role, might be the most anticipated of them all.
The Doctor Doom movie, announced this year at the San Diego Comic Con, is another project of great interest. Unlike Venom, which is part of a SpiderVerse that lacks a Spider-Man, Doctor Doom will be set in a proper shared universe. With Deadpool and Logan, 20th Century Fox proved that it can handle comic book movies aimed at more mature audiences.
We feel that a movie about a villain should be geared to such an audience.
But we’ve had no further news since the movie was announced. Mads Mikkelsen (Kaecilius in Doctor Strange and Galen Erso in Rogue One) has expressed interest in the role, but heBen Mendelsohn, who portrayed Daggett in The Dark Knight Rises and Orson Krennic in Rogue One. During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Mendelsohn had the following to say about Doctor Doom:
Doctor Doom is the greatest comic character of all time. That's a great role. The thing that's appealing about Victor is the damage and trauma, the loss of the family, the wrong done to him and then the takeover, the revenge, and then the protectiveness of Latveria wrapped in that Cold War vibe. There's something about the combination of that. What actually makes him great is his caring bit.
Again, we’re not sure what’s happening with the Doctor Doom project. But 20th Century Fox should pay attention to these fan-favorite actors. Mendelsohn’s star is shining very brightly, and he has a number of interesting projects coming out in the coming years (Ready Player One and Robin Hood are already in post-production, and the actor is rumored to be a main antagonist in Marvel's Captain Marvel).
