Game freaks must already be so hyped for the two video-game-based live-action movies of 2016 - Warcraft and Assassin's Creed. While the first one is scheduled for June 10 release, the second will hit the theaters on December 21. Both movies took a good long time to finally come to life - we had been hearing about Warcraft's development since 2006, and Assassin's Creed’s since 2011.
But we might not have to wait too long for a sequel to the Assassin's Creed movie! The Tracking Board reports that a sequel to the Ubisoft-New Regency venture is already in motion! That surely comes as a surprise, considering the box office track record of movies based on video games.
The Jake Gyllenhaal starrer Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time is the most successful film that couldn't manage more than $336.4 million worldwide. That's not a very impressive number for a movie with a budget of around $150 to $200 million.
Laying the groundwork for a sequel obviously means that the studios are feeling very confident about Assassin's Creed. Well, strange things happen at the box office every now and then. 20th Century Fox didn't expect Deadpool to become the highest-grossing X-Men movie in North America. And they also didn't believe that Fantastic Four would be such a disaster that they would have to wipe the sequel from their timeline. And both events did happen!
Michael Fassbender to return for the Assassin's Creed sequel!
According to the report, Michael Fassbender will reprise his Assassin's Creed movie lead character, Callum Lynch, in the sequel. And he will also return as a producer along with Conor McCaughan, Jean-Julien Baronnet and Frank Marshall.
The report doesn't say anything on whether or not director of the movie Justin Kurzel and other members such as Marion Cotillard, Ariane Labed and Jeremy Irons would return. We might have to wait a good while for the official confirmation.
