The first trailer for Assassin's Creed has just debuted. And it looks…good? Assassins' Creed stars Michael Fassbender, who is now at the top of his game, and that is a good thing. The other cast members include (in no particular order) Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael Kenneth Williams. So this is a good cast, with a director (Justin Kurzel) who has proved himself (Macbeth). However, we cannot shake off the feeling that this new game adaptation will fall right into place with all of the others that went before it.
The Assassin's Creed game franchise has been lauded for its storyline. And, apparently, the movie will follow the same premise, although the storyline will be an original one. However, the same thing was once said about Prince of Persia (both the game series and the movie it spawned), all to a disappointing result.
We mention Prince of Persia because the first Assassin's Creed was originally supposed to be another Prince of Persia game.
But check out the trailer below to see for yourself:
Leaving aside the whole Nikita premise, in which a convict sentenced to death is given another chance, the movie looks exactly like the game it was based on, with eye-catching acrobatics, parkour moves, and pretty neat kills. But is that all that it takes for a movie to be considered good?
Obviously, we may be biased, since all the previous game-to-movie adaptations have failed to deliver, and we know close to nothing about this one. Will Assassin's Creed fall in line with them and disappoint the game franchise’s fans? Or will it deliver and, as the studio hopes, spawn a new franchise?
20th Century Fox has also released a new Assassin's Creed poster, which, like the trailer, is quite flashy. Check it out below!
The movie will be released on the 21st of December 2016, one week after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and during the same weekend as Passengers (a much anticipated sci-fi flick starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt).
