Assassin’s Creed – First Official Still with Michael Fassbender

Assassin's Creed

Next year, Michael Fassbender will star in 2 major blockbusters - X-Men: Apocalypse and Assassin's Creed. And while we know plenty of details about the former (including the role of Fassbender's Magneto in the overall plot), we are still pretty much in the dark about the latter. But, given the release date (21st of December), there is plenty of time to find out more.

In Assassin's Creed, Fassbender plays a double role - one in the future (as Callum Lynch), and one in the past (as skilled assassin Aguilar). The movie will be set in the same universe as the video games, which means that the director and the producers have all the freedom needed to make this a hit - thus far, almost all the movie based on video games have been critical (and oftentimes box office) failures.

Until now, 2 images were released for the movie - a title poster and a pic of Fassbender as Aguilar. Now a third one was officially released, straight out of the flick this time. Fassbender and co-star Ariane Labed, hiding on a rooftop, most likely planning an assassination.

Assassin's Creed is one of the most successful video game series of all time, its appeal consisting in the breathtaking (and very detailed) historical landscapes, the fast-paced rhythm which makes the most out of parkour, as well as the varied types of fighting (from sneaky assassinations to all-out fights with multiple guards). For these reasons alone, the adaptation should prove to be a success.

If this happens, then the path might be opened for other big screen game adaptations (we've been waiting for Halo for so long now).

However, we do recall one other video game adaptation which got us all worked up, an adaptation which proved to be a disaster, despite the talents behind it - Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Maybe the freedom of this new project could save it from the same fate.

Assassin's Creed stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons, and others. It takes placed sometime in the future, as well as in Spain, during the Inquisition. It will be released in 2016, on the 21st of December.
