5 Heroic Marvel Characters Who Would Make Incredible Green Lanterns

The Green Lantern Corps are the most powerful cosmic policing force in comic books.

The DC super-group are made up of individuals from across the cosmos, with one individual from each of the 3600 “sectors” of the universe making up the Corps.

Each member is given a ring that, by utilising the willpower of the wielder, can produce a variety of effects such as flight, energy blasts and the creation of powerful energy constructs of the wielder’s choosing.

Bearing that in mind, we got thinking about the characters from other sources who might be suitable to wield a Green Lantern power ring, based on the fact that they have exhibited exceptional willpower.

So, which characters from DC’s biggest rival - Marvel – could wield one of those rings? We’ve come up with five heroes that we think would be capable and we want you to come up with some other ideas.

Here are five Marvel heroes who would make incredible Green Lanterns…

Thor

The Asgardian Thunder God Thor has incredible willpower and would make one hell of a Green Lantern.

On many occasions, Thor has fought and fought until there was barely a breath left in his body, relying on the power of his will alone to keep going no matter what.

He has bore the pain of having to carve his own eyes out, he has bore the pain of having his entire body liquefied, he has fought with beings infinitely more powerful than himself (like Celestials and the Midgard Serpent) and kept fighting no matter how futile it seemed and he has resisted the mental attacks of Glory – a telepathic Eldritch Abomination who is the physical embodiment of an entire pantheon of dark gods.

With a Green Lantern power ring and Mjolnir in his arsenal – and the willpower and worthiness to wield both exceptionally – Thor would arguably be the most powerful Green Lantern who ever lived.

Namor

Another Marvel hero who definitely has the necessary willpower to successfully wield a Green Lantern power ring is Namor the Sub-Mariner.

A hybrid of human and Atlantean DNA, Namor is also a mutant and, as such, has a very unique physiology which includes great stamina – but, even when that runs out, he has proven that he is prepared to keep fighting using his willpower alone.

Such is the level of his willpower, when Doctor Doom was attempting to telepathically control the world’s entire population by using an amplified Purple Man as his pawn (Doom being someone who knows a hell of a lot about having great willpower himself), Doom took precautions because of the presumed resistance of just one character – and that man was Namor. Namor has also mentally resisted the powers of the extremely potent Serpent Crown – to the extent that he was actually able to escape its grasps and remove it.

Namor is already very powerful, so with the powers of a Green Lantern he’d be even more worthy of ruling the seas than he is now.

Wolverine

He’s the best there is at what he does, and what he does isn’t very nice, but would he be the best Green Lantern? Well, perhaps not, but Wolverine definitely has it in him to be a damn good one.

Although his rapid regenerative healing factor undoubtedly helps, the fact is that Wolverine has kept on fighting when the odds were stacked against him time and time again.

He has continued to fight after having his heart ripped out, he has literally willed himself back from the dead, he has resisted the mental attacks of the likes of the Phoenix and he has continued to fight when he was forced to experience every ounce of pain, every bullet wound, every broken bone, every nightmare and every bad memory he has ever experienced all at once.

While he might not have the creativity to produce particularly imaginative constructs, he undoubtedly has the willpower to wield a Green Lantern power ring with great competence and efficiency.

Reed Richards

As a member of – and indeed the leader of – the Fantastic Four, it’s hard to imagine Reed Richards AKA Mister Fantastic heading off into space to join the Green Lantern Corps – but by God he’d be a great recruit.

He’s known for being a genius rather than for being tough – and his stretching power doesn’t exactly fill his opponents with dread – but Richards is actually one hell of a tough cookie.

His arch-enemy Doctor Doom has incredible willpower, but Richards actually beat Doom in a battle of wills over the Ultimate Nullifier and, most impressively, Reed held the entire universe together using sheer force of will when the Alien Entity used him to help to recreate it from scratch.

Not only is Reed’s willpower good enough to fuel a Green Lantern power ring, he also has the genius and imagination to create some truly incredible constructs – in fact, Reed’s constructs would arguably be the greatest ones ever seen.

Captain America

Arguably, the most suitable man to wield a Green Lantern power ring in all of Marvel comic books is the super soldier and World War II hero Steve Rogers AKA Captain America.

His willpower and determination is second to none – Captain America will never give up, even in the face of devastating odds (such as when he was prepared to stand up to an Infinity Gauntlet-wielding Thanos when all the other heroes had been defeated). He has broken free of illusions on will alone, he has fought through horrific injuries, he has willed himself back from being dead and you only have to look back to pre-super soldier Rogers to see how determined he was to join the army, despite being small and sickly, to see his willpower in action.

Such is Captain America’s competence and the level of his leadership skills, he’d probably end up becoming the leader of the Green Lantern Corps if he was recruited – and, combined with his vibranium shield, a Green Lantern power ring in his possession would be awesome.

The only problem is, Captain America would probably reject the opportunity to wield such power – rather like Batman did in DC Comics – because he is so humble and grounded. Shame.

What do you think? Would these characters make great Green Lanterns? Which other Marvel heroes would be welcomed into the Corps? Have your say below.
