Marvel's 2012 venture The Avengers introduced Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk replacing Ed Norton of their 2008 solo The Incredible Hulk. The second installment of Avengers series Age of Ultron is about to hit the theatres on 1 May, 2015. Between the two installments of Joss Whedon's mega superhero series, Captain America had a solo movie; Iron Man had a solo movie; and Thor also had a solo movie. The only big superhero to miss out from having a standalone movie in the interval between the two Avengers is Ruffalo's gigantic green monster.
Hulk fans must have been disappointed with Marvel for such discrimination to their favorite superhero. Well, Joss Whedon in a recent interview with IGN explains why Mark Ruffalo didn't have a solo outing when Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth did have.
Hulk's Not Having A Solo Movie Is An Advantage For Joss Whedon!
According to Whedon, as a result of the drastic development of superhero characters in their solo movies, his job of collaborating with all of them has been pretty tough. He has to deal with every character's perception of such changes while still crafting a movie that one can watch without having watched the solo movies or even the first installment of Avengers series.
If Hulk also had his standalone movie between The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon's task would have been tougher just like a jugglers task gets when he's asked to deal with four balls instead of three!
He Agrees It’s An Advantage But It Wasn't His Idea, Rather It's Kevin's!
In the interview, Whedon claimed that though Ruffalo's not having a solo outing was good for him, he didn't say "˜Don't make a Hulk film or anything like that'. It was Marvel president Kevin Feige who told him that having somebody to be only seen in the Avengers was good for them. Whedon backs Kevin’s idea saying that not having a Hulk solo ‘doesn’t suck’!
However, Whedon also seemed to justify the reports that Hulk would have a bigger role in The Avengers sequel by saying "there's something terrible coming that you'll love."
