The Russo Brothers may be considering as many as 66 characters for Avengers: Infinity War, but Hope van Dyne isn't one of them, at least not as the Wasp. We can be sure about this because Evangeline Lilly, who plays the character, confirmed it in a recent interview with Blastr at New York Comic-Con.
According to the Canadian actress, the Wasp will not be in the third Avengers installment, but will team up with the Earth's Mightiest Heroes in the fourth, the title of which is yet to be announced. The reason we won't see the female superhero in the May 4, 2018 release is that it’s coming out ahead of Ant-Man and the Wasp, which will roll into theaters on July 6, 2018. And they want to introduce her as the Wasp in the Ant-Man sequel. Lilly says:
There's an Avengers series coming out, I believe it's a two-parter, and the Wasp won't be in the first part. She'll be in the second part because they want to preserve that reveal for Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Before Captain America: Civil War arrived, many speculated that the Wasp would show up in the movie, which didn't happen. While explaining why they left the character out of the movie, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed and Marvel President Kevin Feige said that they want to offer her a proper introduction instead of making it a moment among moments. The Wasp's absence in Avengers: Infinity War does make sense when we consider those remarks.
During the interview, Evangeline Lilly also talks a little about Ant-Man and the Wasp. She says:
I'm excited because it's essentially going to be the origin of the Wasp. Of course, we're going to see the Wasp for the first time take on the mantle, and put on the suit, and fly about, and do her thing.
