Taika Waititi directed just a single MCU movie, last year's Thor: Ragnarok. But this single movie changed the way fans looked at the Thor movies. Ragnarok wasn't just a hit with the critics, but with the audiences as well. It made $854 million worldwide, which means more than $200 million more than the next entry.
But, even if Taika Waititi expressed his interest in directing another Thor flick, this is unlikely to happen. And that is because, as things look right now, Marvel will move past the solo franchises that opened the shared universe.
The bombshell that shook the MCU a couple of days ago could turn out to be the opportunity all Taika Waititi fans have been waiting for. James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 over some very offensive tweets.
More than 10 thousand fans signed petitions to convince Disney to hire Gunn again. Stars have already spoken about this, taking the director's side. But, at the same time (and unsurprisingly for some), others (such as Sen. Ted Cruz) are already calling for Gunn's prosecution.
Disney won't call James Gunn back and this is absolutely clear. But, at the same time, the studio really needs a new writer and director for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Leaving aside the divisiveness of the Gunn issue, fans have already spoken! The best director to replace him is none other than Taika Waititi! And this because of the excellent visuals and effortless comedy of Thor: Ragnarok, but not only.
As some noted by some, this could also bring about the team-up nobody knew they wanted: between Korg and Groot. Even if for just another rock, paper, scissors joke, this needs to happen! (via Comic Book)
