Taika Waititi Explains Major Change in Mjolnir Destruction Scene

We've known since we saw the first Thor: Ragnarok teaser trailer that Hela would destroy Thor's Mjolnir during what appeared to be their first encounter. And we knew that this would happen in a New York alleyway, probably after Hela’s confrontation with Odin. But later clips revealed that the setting for Mjolnir's destruction had changed in the reshoots.

While the scenes appear to be almost identical, the setting changed from the New York alley to a green plain. It was likely that it was just misdirection, possibly due to poor CGI, but the scene remained. Director Taika Waititi’s explanation for the shift is below, but watch out for a minor spoiler at the end!

The Revengers (Marvel)

Waititi discussed the shift during an interview with Digital Spy. Taking into account numerous fan theories in regard to Odin and Hela, we felt it made more sense for the scene to take place in New York, but the director felt it was too convenient. And plains are cooler than alleys, right?

Here's the thing, mate. Here's the thing: Alleyways aren't cool, and fields are cool, all right? Ask anyone. We originally shot some of that stuff in…New York, and what we wanted to do was to have them go down to Earth and see Doctor Strange, but it felt too convenient that he was suddenly just down the road, in an alley. Also, everything up until then had been so fast-paced and all over the place, we wanted to go somewhere peaceful and actually chill out with the characters, and be with Odin and pass this wisdom and stuff, and not have to hear stupid yellow cabs honking out the back.

Waititi then revealed some additional information about the scene (spoiler):

Hela destroys Mjolnir in New York (Marvel)

It just felt like a terrible environment to have a scene which could be very emotional for what happens with Odin and the boys, and the first time we've ever seen the three guys all together, and him telling them he loves them, and acknowledging Loki as his son. It was just very important for us to be in a kind of beautiful, peaceful environment.

Can we assume that the death of the King of Asgard is Ragnarok’s main theme? Taking into account Odin's story arc and his relationship with the boys, this might be the tear-jerking resolution.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released on November 3.
