Scarlet Witch: Discussing Her Potential Allegiance In Civil War

The teams for Captain America: Civil War have all but been revealed.

Concept art for the movie shows that Captain America will be joined by Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Sharon Carter, Falcon and Winter Soldier, while Iron Man will be joined by War Machine, Black Widow, Black Panther and Vision (on the face of it, those teams heavily favour Iron Man in terms of power, in spite of Captain America’s team being bigger in number – but that’s a topic for another article).

This leaves three heroes that we believe will be in the movie without a confirmed allegiance; Hulk, Spider-Man and Scarlet Witch.

Hulk, we can assume, will go with his friend Iron Man (if indeed he chooses a side at all or is in the movie for long enough to do so), Spider-Man isn’t expected to swing into action in Civil War and will only cameo briefly, and that leaves Scarlet Witch (she has been seen in set photos fighting alongside Captain America against Crossbones, but we can presume that is before the Civil War actually kicks off and means nothing as far as the teams are concerned).

In this article, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of her potential allegiances with Captain America, Iron Man and as a neutral onlooker.

Captain America: Pros

Captain America

Captain America

The major pro for Scarlet Witch joining up with Captain America’s team in Captain America: Civil War is that she has had some personal beef with Tony Stark – but she’s never had any beef with Steve Rogers.

Moreover, Rogers is undoubtedly the best leader of the two (and the “better” man in terms of his morals) and, as such, his influence over a youngster like Wanda Maximoff could be enough to get her on his side.

The fact remains, however, that a shell created by Stark Industries killed her parents and Wanda was looking for revenge against Tony Stark until she appeared to accept that it wasn’t entirely his fault.

That being said, there will surely be an underlying resentment towards the genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist and joining Captain America’s plight maybe be seen by her as an opportunity for revenge.

Captain America: Cons

Captain America’s plight is that of the anti-registration side – he does not want superhuman activity to be legislated by the government – and that could work against him when it comes to recruiting Scarlet Witch.

Wanda Maximoff lost her brother in a superhuman conflict and, as such, might be all for having it legislated, which could put her and Steve Rogers at odds.

Moreover, the death of her mother due to a Stark Industries shell made her very anti-American for a while. Now that she seems to have accepted that Tony Stark isn’t directly to blame for said death, she may turn her wrath on the red, white and blue of the United States.

With Captain America representing stereotypical American values to a T, siding with him might not be something Scarlet Witch wants to do.

Neutral: Pros

The Civil War comics had two sides conflicting over the Superhuman Registration Act – just like the movies will – but they also had a neutral onlooker.

That neutral onlooker was Doctor Strange and, given that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is not set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, someone else might be that neutral onlooker.

Scarlet Witch fulfils the magic-based character role that Strange would have taken and, as such, may end up taking his role – and that’s probably the strongest argument for her being neutral (such is the level of her power that she could potentially use it to end the conflict peacefully).

There is also the simple fact that, unlike the other heroes, she might be reluctant to turn against either of the two men (Captain America or Iron Man) that she fought alongside in her home country of Sokovia against the evil robotic villain Ultron.

Neutral: Cons

Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch’s brother died during a superhuman conflict, so the likelihood of her merely sitting on the fence during a war over how such conflicts should be legislated seems slim.

She’s also arguably the most powerful character amongst the ranks of the Avengers, so it would be something of a waste to not see her in action during the most epic battle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.

The fact that she has yet to be designated a side would seem to suggest that she will join the battle late and turn the tide in the favour of whichever hero she sides with.

The most obvious prediction seems to be that Hulk will arrive late and join one side (probably Iron Man) and Scarlet Witch will arrive late and join the opposite team (probably, therefore, Captain America), but you really can’t see her failing to choose one.

Iron Man: Pros

It’s hard to think of a definitive reason as to why Scarlet Witch would choose to side with a man whose weapons killed her mother, but let’s at least give it a shot!

Tony Stark is incredibly charismatic – he certainly has the charm (as well as the looks) to persuade most females to do almost anything – and that could be a draw for the somewhat naive youngster Wanda Maximoff.

He also has the whole “pro-registration” thing going for him. When Scarlet Witch’s brother – Pietro Maximoff AKA Quicksilver was killed, it was during a superhuman conflict. Scarlet Witch may well want to see such conflicts legislated in the future as a result.

Stark is also generally seen as being very “cool”, which could appeal to the typically trendy youngster in Wanda. Imagine it in the real world – who would the typical real world youngster be drawn to? A World War II fossil or a billionaire in a cool powered suit who had previously saved the world from aliens? There’s also the fact that their colour schemes match! But that’s really clutching at straws.

Iron Man: Cons

The fairly glaring reason that Scarlet Witch might not join Iron Man’s team in Captain America: Civil War is the one we’ve already mentioned on previous pages in this article – Tony Stark’s weapons killed her mother.

It was a Stark Industries shell going off that caused her mother to perish in Sokovia and Wanda Maximoff held a grudge against Stark up until the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While they seemed to settle their differences, given the opportunity and an excuse to actively go up against him – that being the Civil War itself – might be all she needs to revive her hatred for him.

There’s also the fact that having a powerful mind might help her to resist his usual charms! Regardless, her alignment remains a mystery and we will have to wait to find out exactly what it is.

What do you think? Will any of these points prove to be key to Scarlet Witch’s choice of allegiance in Captain America: Civil War? Which side do you think she will choose? Have your say below.
