The last time we saw Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was toward the end of Avenger: Age of Ultron, when he helped the Earth's Mightiest Heroes build their new headquarters. He was totally out of the picture when the superheroes fought each other and split into two separate groups in Captain America: Civil War.
In a recent interview with HOT 97 (via Screen Rant), Jackson reiterated that while Fury is expected to return in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, we shouldn't expect him to show up in Black Panther. The interview focused on his recently released movie, Kong: Skull Island, but the 68-year-old actor seemingly teased the return of an MCU supervillain who appeared back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Hugo Weaving's Johann Schmidt, aka Red Skull:
You didn't see me in Civil War. I'm still out there trying to figure out what The Skull is going to"¦
We can't be sure whether Jackson was referring to the Hydra boss or the terrorist organization itself. But he must have meant either of them, as there is no character named The Skull in Marvel Comics. Check out the interview clip below!
In a 2012 interview with Collider, Weaving shared that he didn’t think that Red Skull would return, and that he didn’t want to portray the character again. But he did mention that he had signed up for multiple MCU installments, and he’d have to come back if Marvel Studios insisted on it. He seemed to have a change of heart in a more recent interview with Yahoo, during which he had good things to say about the character.
We’ve come across numerous fan theories on how Red Skull may be brought back in Avengers: Infinity War, but we’ve seen nothing official, not even a convincing rumor. So we shouldn't be too optimistic about the supervillain's return.
