For a while now, it’s been rumored that Zendaya is portraying Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the actress seemed to debunk the story in a recent interview. While she didn't exactly say that she isn’t playing MJ, she did confirm that her character won’t be Peter Parker's love interest in the movie. And the description she offered of her character doesn't seem to fit MJ at all.
So, the big question that has arisen following Zendaya's interview is - who is Peter's love interest in Spider-Man: Homecoming? Latino Review's Kellvin Chavez claims to know the answer. According to his latest report, sources close to the Jon Watts venture have revealed that Tom Holland's character is actually moonstruck by Laura Harrier's Liz Allan.
While Liz may not be as popular as Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy, she was the webslinger’s crush during the era of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. In those classic comic books, Peter had a crush on Liz while she was dating Flash Thompson, the character Tony Revolori is playing in Spider-Man: Homecoming. She initially treated Peter like a nerd, but eventually fell for him and left Flash.
Chavez adds that such a subplot appears to be "something straight out of one of John Hughes' 80s teen dramedies". And Jon Watts has shared previously that the iconic director's work has been a huge inspiration for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
There's also the fact that Sam Raimi used MJ as Peter Parker's love interest in his Spider-Man trilogy, while Marc Webb used Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man movies. So introducing Liz Allan as the love interest, at least in the first movie, doesn't seem like a bad idea. What do you think, though?
